We were lucky to catch up with LaTia Kirby recently and have shared our conversation below.
LaTia , thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Before we get into specifics, let’s talk about success more generally. What do you think it takes to be successful?
I think everyone has their own unique view of what it means to be successful but for me it’s being disciplined and having clear goals. I’m a home health occupational therapist and I drive to patient’s homes daily to treat them. Sometimes I work eight or more hours and when I come home from work, I still have to complete my paperwork as well as find time to work on my business. I’m usually drained after work, but I know what I want to accomplish with HBCU MADE. Also, writing daily goals has allowed me to be more organized and focused.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
My name is LaTia Kirby. I’m an occupational therapist and owner of the brand HBCU MADE. HBCU MADE is a clothing and healthcare apparel line. We provide a platform for alumni that have attended and support Historically Black Colleges and Universities. We also offer a platform for healthcare workers that have attended HBCUs. Our products include T-shirts, hats, socks, sweatshirts, and other apparel.
Initially, I wanted to put a spotlight on healthcare workers that have attended HBCUs, but HBCU MADE quickly turned into something more than I expected. I want anyone that has ever attended a HBCU to be able to share their experiences and show love for their school.
One of the things that I truly love about my brand is the fact that I can advocate for these institutions. They have played a major role in my life and are a part of my family legacy. I graduated from North Carolina A&T State University as well as my father, sister and several of my cousins. My mother is a proud graduate of Fayetteville State University.
My goal is to continue to educate people on the significance of Historically Black Colleges and Universities.
Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
My experience, consistency and what my products represent are allowing me to build a solid reputation in my market.
I’m not just anyone advocating for HBCUs. I’ve had the opportunity to attend a HBCU for undergrad and a PWI (predominantly white institution) for graduate school. It was not the same. I felt more at ease and accepted at my HBCU. I wasn’t just another student, I was family.
Any advice for growing your clientele? What’s been most effective for you?
I’m constantly seeking ways to grow my business and reach my consumers, but I noticed a few things have really helped such as networking, social media, and word of mouth.
Participating in pop-ups shops and other events have given me that opportunity as well because I’m able to connect with my customers in person.
