We were lucky to catch up with Latasha Mobley recently and have shared our conversation below.
Latasha, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Alright, so we’d love to hear about how you got your first client or customer. What’s the story?
I actually started off making gift baskets. I used to watch my mom make them, then I asked her if she could teach me how to make baskets as well. My first potential client found my business page, on Facebook and asked if I could make his son a birthday basket since i actually made easter baskets and spa basket samples I displayed on my business page. I was excited that someone wanted me to make a birthday basket for their child. It was superhero themed and i even made dessert treats to go inside of the basket as well. The client was very happy with the basket I made; I asked my mom for guidance to make sure I was doing everything correct.

Latasha, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I myself love making crafts starting from learning how to sew in middle school. Years down the line I started writing down business ideas at a young age just trying to come up with a business plan. I was determined to move out of state at an early age to pursue a fashion career. Life tends to take you in different directions. I eventually found myself after going to school for fashion design and marketing. I actually left school to pursue my own path. I knew I wanted to create products that would make people smile and I wanted them to remember how creative I am. I started off making gift baskets, then eventually down the line I started to make desserts. I know for a fact someone is always going to need dessert for a special occasion. My next product ended up being chocolate dipped Oreos and pretzels I taught myself how to make them. I sold these products at my workplace to make ends meet and became very popular. I then moved on to teach myself how to make chocolate covered strawberries that was very popular and trending. Eventually turned into candy tables that consist of chocolate covered treats strawberries, rice Krispy treats, pretzel rods and Oreos. Problems I’ve solved, was not turning people away, who ran into issues with cancellations from other business owners. things happen and till this day I have stuck to that plan because I want to be a part of the solution and not the problem. What sets me apart is knowing creating a product, means so much more to me than the profit since I have given products away. I’ve learned to have fun with the things I create, and I enjoy making people happy. I kn0w what it’s like to fall on hard times so work with my clients I also connect with them, so they can see I am a people person and I enjoy what I do. I put my everything into my products I make because I’ve grown passionate about everything I make. Now I’m making cakes, cupcakes along with party treats I made in the beginning. I’m still putting smiles on people faces its very therapeutic and satisfying.

Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
I will start off by saying I pushed for my own business after losing my job, so I sold cookies, pop and chips to provide for my son and me. I was determined to get bk on my feet and I eventually accepted a new position, it still wasn’t enough to make ends meet, that’s when I started selling my products to make ends meet. It was also a challenge operating my business during the pandemic. In the beginning of the pandemic, I ended up being diagnosed with pneumonia. of course, I had to stop all sells and production until I fully recovered it took a while, but I overcame my illness. Over time I also was diagnosed with covid twice. I was getting discouraged and feeling down ready to close shop for good, since the pandemic was taking a toll on my health as well as my family. My son and mother got sick too, so I had to care for them as well. Throughout it all I never gave up and I feel like everything I went through made me stronger.

How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
I started putting more time and dedication to my passion and play later. I had to say goodbye to night life if I really wanted to pursue my passion full on. I had to find balance; make sure the company I keep wants success out of life as well. I had to find balance even with myself care and don’t put my self care last for that balance. if that meant walking away from college to make sure I was happy and ready to pursue my own path then so be it.
