We caught up with the brilliant and insightful LaTasha Jackson a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
LaTasha, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. We’d love to have you retell us the story behind how you came up with the idea for your business, I think our audience would really enjoy hearing the backstory.
I like to think that I was born as an entrepreneur. I have always had the desire to work for myself and I found it relatively easy to organize and start businesses. So that is exactly what I did., then I did it again, and again. Every time I had an idea, I started a business. At one point I had at least 5 businesses on paper. Then one day my husband, who was my boyfriend at the time said “You can’t just keep starting businesses. You have to work one plan all the way through.” His message resonated with me, but the ideas kept coming. At that point, I decided, instead of continuing to start businesses for myself, I would use my creativity and strategic thinking to help other women to start and grow businesses. The more I thought about it, the more it made sense because people would always come to me with business questions, seeking advice and or resources and I always had or found the answer they needed.. I find joy in researching business ideas, trends, markets etc. This was something that came easily for me and it is a natural extension of who I am. I was excited because I could still start and grow business and I could still help ideas become reality for myself and others.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
As the leader of That Startup Group, I work with founders to help them lay the foundation for profitable and sustainable businesses. We provide online education via our StartUp School for Women and coaching on startup strategies. We also offer business registration services and website design. As a female business owner, I understand that starting a business is a scary and sometimes lonely road. This is why I have created a community to offer support, information, and resources.
The goal of That StartUp Group is to provide those in the idea and early stages of business with the support and resources necessary to build a business that is profitable and sustainable. I believe what makes us different is that we cater to a very specific audience (women with businesses 0-3 years old) and we understand the unique needs of that audience, thus making it a win and an enjoyable experience for all.
Creating the community was a necessary piece because on this journey you need to be around people who “get it”. Our business meetings happen at places like the beach or over brunch. Imagine enjoying good company and learning to make money at the same time, that is the goal for our team and for our clients.
What’s been the best source of new clients for you?
My clients! Happy clients are the best marketing tools. I have done very little paid marketing or advertising. My business has been able to sustain based on word of mouth. I try to make sure that the team at That StartUp Group always provides an exceptional experience for each client. That strategy is the gift that keeps on giving. Our clients trust us and they refer their friends and family to us. We don’t take that for granted.
Are there any books, videos, essays or other resources that have significantly impacted your management and entrepreneurial thinking and philosophy?
There are several. I am an avid reader, so I’m always looking for ways to learn. My top two mind altering books are The E Myth Revisited and Rocket Fuel. Both of those booked changed how I look at being a business owner and how I structured the work that we do. I recommend every that entrepreneur reads them.
