We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Lataryn Rainey-Perry. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Lataryn below.
Alright, Lataryn thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Let’s start with the story of your mission. What should we know?
When I began my creative /entrepreneurial journey most of the resources that I needed weren’t readily available. I had to do some research to locate certain services and products, which was very time consuming. So, when I created my businesses, I did so with the notion that I wanted to ensure that no one else would have to struggle the way that I did. I wanted to be a one stop shop or a source of information to point others in the right direction.
With my publishing company, Penwork Publishing, I assist writers with the development and creation of their books from start to finish while also educating them about the publishing process and marketing. I’ve also created products, The Traveling Scribe Collection, that helps busy artists focus, unwind, and feel inspired to set the perfect mood in their creative spaces.
In the essence of creating memories, Rainey Behind The Lens Photography is how I continue storytelling through images.
My magazine, You Go Girl Magazine, is a platform I created to spotlight women and their businesses and give them a space to share their stories about their experiences as business owners or just creatives.
Through my yearly brunch, You Go Girl Brunch, we come together to celebrate all the hard work that we as creatives and entrepreneurs have poured into our dreams throughout the year.
My mission is and has always been to create spaces and platforms for my peers to share their gifts.
Lataryn, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
My name is Lataryn Rainey-Perry and I create dope shit. My title as The Creative Maven, literally speaks for itself because I am pretty much great at everything I do. That greatness doesn’t just stop with me though, I have been blessed with a gift that keeps on giving and one that helps others embrace their greatness as well. I’m a mother of three, a Marine vet, a proud dream enabler, and a woman of many skills. I’m most known for my authorship.
My writing journey began when I was 7 years old, and it evolved when I was 16. By age 24, I had become a self-published author and first-time business owner. Since I could remember it has always been a dream of mine to travel, write books, and live in a New York brownstone. I made two of those three goals a reality (still holding out for that brownstone). My love of storytelling spilled over into me developing my own publishing company in 2012 because I wanted to provide other aspiring writers with a smooth and stress-free publishing process. For the ones who hadn’t yet began writing their books but needed help, I offered monthly writer workshops to give them the creative push they needed.
To be able to help someone achieve their goal of writing and publishing a book brings me so much joy and that feeling of watching them touch the very first copy of their book never gets old. Most people have a story to tell but don’t know where to begin, and when they come to me for assistance, they get much more than they expect. What sets me and my company apart from others is that I don’t mind the hand holding process. I encourage the writers to take their time, I educate them on their options, help them learn their writing style, and ensure that their entire experience is pleasurable.
When working with me, my only requirement is that you understand this is a process that requires patience and your full commitment.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
Having full creative control over your work and managing your time as you see fit is the most rewarding part of this journey.
Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
Mid 2020, business for my publishing company was increasing at a rate that required me to bring in some outside help. I literally hired six new employees. This was such a big deal for me because it was a major goal of mine to have a full staff. My clientele had almost tripled during this time and I was delegating work to my staff. Then the inevitable happened, the work load became too much for a few and they ended up not only leaving, but not finishing the assigned work which delayed the completion times. It was a stressful situation and I couldn’t pass the work to the employees that I still had because they were all working on time sensitive projects. I remember sitting in my office and giving myself a pep talk where I basically reminded myself that when this journey began it was just me doing a job that required three people at the time. I did it once before and I can do it again. Once I was able to fight off the anxiety attack that was trying to take me down, I took over the unfinished works, reached out to the clients (who were more than understanding), and finish them within a reasonable amount of time. That experience was tough but it pushed me to create a better solution to avoid such things from happening again.
