We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Latanya Counts a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Latanya, thanks for joining us today. Let’s jump to the end – what do you want to be remembered for?
For me I want to build legacy where I was known to embrace other cultures unique desserts to our culture. Set standards to not minimize a selective choices one has to enjoy the deliciousness of food and drinks with a twist of soul. I want to be remembered as the sweet Black Business owner who had most yummiest Boba Teas one has ever tasted. As we live by the saying “always cook with your heart and a smile” it definitely plays a part of the outcome on whatever product or dish you’re providing. People will be to say she pulled it off without being brought up in the Asian community and was thought step by step by a sweet Asian lady who owned a Asian store and she did it so well no-one wouldn’t be able to notice the difference.
Latanya, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
Funny story, I was shopping in a Asian Market owned by a sweet lady and her husband, as I browsed the aisles I came across these tapioca pearls with my daughter being a huge tik toc head she goes “thats the stuff that be in the drinks.” The owner of the store over heard and smiles. I begin to asked questions, she started to educate me on it. When she mention fruit can be added in the drink I was 100% sold! My household loves fruit and I thought it would be a great idea to try it out. After trying once I aced it and without a doubt I was back at the Market. The more interest I showed she noticed and walked me thru step by step, and taught me recipes. I would say TBJ simply fell into my lap.
Founded in 2022 The Boba Joynt began to launch providing the most yummiest Boba Teas one could taste. As we brew and mix our flavors with our hearts it became a success. We strive to provide the most outstanding customer service to our customers without a hiccup. TBJ has an awesome selection of drinks to choose from and we are excited on expanding our menu.
TBJ has been blessed to be able to collab with some of Maryland known places such as the 32nd Street Farmers Market, Afram, Sowebo Fest and The Maryland State Fair. We are working on our mobile store to spread our flavors to serve our drinks throughout many communities.
I can honestly say it has been a challenge and we are still facing challenges as we build. Building a business takes alot of scarifies, dedication and time so I’m not going to say to anyone it easy breezy. In 2023 I quit my job to see how it would go if I went full time and no it didn’t go as planned, winter time seems to be our slow season which put a temporary burden on my family. But I was able to resume work full time with a work from home job that allows me to focus on both TBJ and my employment.
Look out for The Boba Joynt we will soon be in your area its taking us some time but we will get there patience is a virtue.
I’m very humble to say that we will be back at The Maryland State Fair 2024, Afram 2024 and the Sowebo Fest make sure you stop pass our station to give us a try I promise you wont be disappointed.
How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
Curating local popup shop and school events helped build the reputation of TBJ. Now that we have our website up and running with deliveries starting soon we are hoping the name gets out there much more
We’d love to hear about how you keep in touch with clients.
We here at TBJ are excited to be launching our Loyalty Program to stay connected with our customers. This program will allow us to send out coupons, and provide points to be use to purchase free drinks.
