We were lucky to catch up with LaTamara Buggs recently and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, LaTamara thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Do you take vacations? How do you keep things going – any advice for entrepreneurs who feel like they can’t step away from their business for a short vacation?
Absolutely! You have to, or you’ll go crazy!! Vacations are a must! Unplugged vacations at that! You have to be able to take a break and allow yourself to reset! If you don’t this entrepreneur life will consume you! Me personally I try to take a vacation every quarter! Even if its just a weekend off from work or a small getaway! Your peace and sanity is worth more than a dollar!

LaTamara, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I’m LaTamara Buggs! I’m a wife, mother of 2, educator, and a cake artist! I opened Sugamamas in 2016 on accident! I say accident because I never intended on starting a business, I wanted my daughter to have a nice treat table for her party and we couldn’t afford it. I enrolled at YouTube University I taught myself how to! After that, people started asking me to do parties for them! The rest was history! We later introduced cakes, which is now what I love the most! People come to me for custom creations! No offense to the grocery store, but I’m not them! I create edible art! Have a design in mind, I’m who you call to bring it to life!
What’s worked well for you in terms of a source for new clients?
In this day and age, social media is your absolute best friend!! Hands down, utilize every platform you can! Yes it’s time consuming but it helps especially if you offer a product! Get a quality camera, or phone take great photos and videos and post post post! Even if it only gets few likes or views, keep posting! Pay for the targeted ads, they most definitely work!

Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
Covid!!! Omg covid came and I just knew this was the end! Nobody was having parties, I was getting cancelations left and right! I had more money go out of my account than coming in! I decided one day out of boredom that I would have a small bake sale. We developed a contactless pick up system, masked up and kept moving! Those bake sales ended up growing our clientele even more! We were able to actually make more money selling novelty desserts! We still have some of our clientele from our Covid bake sale!
