We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Last Autumn a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Last , looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Looking back, do you think you started your business at the right time? Do you wish you had started sooner or later?
I, Teresa, started writing music in middle school. I remember writing so many poems and little melodies growing up. My brother gave me his old guitar when I was in 7th grade but I started playing and writing a lot more in high school. My high school friends were apart of choir and had their own little band so I would join some of their after school practices and occasionally sing and play along. I have written several original songs but never really put in out for the world to hear. I was not confident enough to play shows on my own acoustically so I waited. I kept playing and writing on my own, then I came up with Last Autumn in late 2019. I started posting some acoustic covers and originals on social media. Then I met Wil and started to collab acoustically with him for fun. I asked him if he wanted to be apart of my band and even with his busy schedule he was willing to jam. His friend Thomas joined us in the practice space one day and played some songs with us and we immediately got along great. Later that day I asked him if he would be interested in joining as our official drummer and he said yes! Looking back, I do wish I had started sharing my music sooner but I am thankful that I did not rush into anything. The bandmates that I have are creative musicians, kind, and passionate about the art. So ultimately, I am glad I was able to take that step out of my comfort zone and show them my original songs so that they could help me make them even better as a full band.

Last , before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Last Autumn is a San Diego based band that consists of three members, Teresa- writer, singer, guitarist; Wil- bassist, backup vocals; Thomas- drummer. Teresa also creates the art, stickers, and other merch. We had our first practice as a band in 2021. We all instantly vibed well together since we first jammed and are not only bandmates but great friends. We released our first single in early 2023 and our second single will be released very soon! The main goal that we have as a band is to create music that people can relate to and have fun doing so. Also to inspire others to create their own art as well. I believe it is important to create things for yourself without expecting any recognition or fame from it, to do it because you genuinely enjoy creating and sharing that passion with others. All three of us look forward to the band practices we have once a week and genuinely have fun playing music together, bouncing off ideas from each other, and going out to eat after practices. We are all goofballs who like to be silly but also know when we need to work to get things done, which I think is a great balance.

For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
I think the most rewarding aspect of being an artist is being able to share your art with others and connect with different people. It a great feeling when people say how our songs and lyrics are relatable and catchy enough to get stuck in their heads. What many people don’t know is that recording just one song is a long process. It takes a lot of time and hard work, from getting the right drum tones, to recording bass, then recording rhythm guitar to a metronome, adding lead guitar, vocals, and backup vocals and melodies. We then need to send our demo to a mixer who works with different instrument levels and effects. Then sending it to get it mastered is a long process but worth the outcome. We put in a lot of work to make our songs sound great while staying true to the meaning behind the lyrics when I wrote them. I think anyone could write and create as a way to express themselves, no matter how old you are or what you’ve experienced. Having the courage and support to be able to share that vulnerability and art with others, and having the opportunity to inspire and work with other musicians and learn about the recording process has been great.
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
A goal that is driving us as a band is simply to create music that people can enjoy listening to and connect to. All three of us are passionate about music and we all grew up musically inclined. We would like to continue making music that people can sing along to and have fun doing so.
