Lashonda , appreciate you joining us today. Let’s start with the story of your mission. What should we know?
Melanated Wine was created due to the lack of diversity in the wine industry. I would go places and would never see brands that spoke to me as a minority woman. Additionally, many of the wines that I purchased were not desirable. This prompted me to research why minority brands were so underrepresented in the wine industry. During my research I was inspired to help change the narrative for people who look like me.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I am originally from Rockford, Illinois and I come from an entrepreneurial family. My grandfather made and sold homemade sausage. My aunt still owns and operates a barbecue restaurant in Rockford, Illinois that is a staple of the community. Growing up in this type of environment inspired me throughout the year’s to pursue various endeavors and now Melanated Wine. I know it may sound serendipitous, but all of these experiences prepared me for my current journey. Melanated Wine is the first Black Owned Winery in Durham, NC history. We have five signature varietals at this time and plan to release more in the future. I am most proud of how the Durham, NC community and beyond have embraced Melanated Wine, it truly is humbling to speak with people about their favorite varietal and how they identify with the brand.
How did you build your audience on social media?
One thing that I am very proud of is the MelaNation, this is the following on all social media platforms. The Melanated Wine social media was literally built one individual at a time. My and I, have placed a promotional flyer/etc in nearly 90% of everyone that follows us. The goal was to make Melanated Wine personable. Many companies just build their social media for followers, my goal was to make it personal, truly putting a name with a follow. I would advise anyone starting a social media campaign for their business to utilize this approach. It is a labor of love but the reward will be evident by engagement and brand loyalty.
How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
Melanated Wine prides itself on exceptional customer service. This has helped set us apart from other’s.
