We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Lashelle Scott a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Lashelle, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Can you recount a story of an unexpected problem you’ve faced along the way?
The most unexpected issue that I have faced was my cancer diagnosis on February 13, 2021. I had experienced other health problems in the past, but nothing can prepare you for the “C” word. I was attending a virtual ceremony for the swearing in of a new judge when I received the phone call from my doctor giving me my initial cancer diagnosis. Nothing can prepare you for this life-altering news. Numb is the best word I can use to describe how I felt. I have never experienced a longer 24 hours than those following the initial diagnosis. Shock. Numbness. Denial. Then finally realization settled in.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I have a Bachelor’s in Business in Administration and one in Criminal Justice and Master’s in Project Management. I have always been interested politics. My first entry into politics was a volunteer for “Obama for America” during his re-election campaign in 2011 followed by volunteering on a Mayoral campaign, a Gubernatorial campaign in Texas, and a Congressional campaign. That all culminated in my own run for office in 2018 as Democrat Precinct Chair for Precicnt 559 in Houston.

How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
The cancer diagnosis forced me to pause, ponder, and pivot in my professional and personal life. I have basically had to learn to start my life all over with this new, yet unwanted, addition to my life. I have had to take my personal health, both mentally and physically, into more consideration. I have to rest more. I have to pace myself. I have to focus my energies on the issues that truly matter.

Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
It is cliche but the one lesson I have had to unlearn is that I’m never too old to learn. I have had to condition myself to understand that I can learn new tactics, new practices, new ideas, and new strategies every single day. I have busied myself with constant continuing education classes. I recently completed the Yale Campaign School and several classes on social media advertising.
