We were lucky to catch up with LaShawnda Ausbon recently and have shared our conversation below.
LaShawnda, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today If you had a defining moment that you feel really changed the trajectory of your career, we’d love to hear the story and details.
My story is one of faith over fear, after finishing massage school I went to work for a local spa chain where I learned a lot and had opportunities to grown. A time came where I had to decide to stay comfortable or trust my gut and step out on faith and become my own boss which changed my life for the better. That leap awarded me autonomy over my time which is priceless. I am able to be there for my two young sons and husband as well as help my clients on there wellness journey in a more customized way.
LaShawnda, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I am a licensed massage therapist and the owner of Self Center Studios, a day spa located in Tomball, Tx. I have been in the wellness industry for over 10 years. Self Center Studios is not just another day spa. The business model is one on one self care. When you come into our facility most of the time it will just be you and your service provider. Our clients never feel rushed or like just another number. We are concerned with you personal wellness goals and are here to help.. We offer massage services, skin care services, beauty services, and other wellness services like guided meditation. The vision, for my business came to me after I had my first son. I prayed to God for guidance on how to go back to work and still be there when ever my son needed me. It started off as just a mobile massage business and it has grown into so much more being a part of the Massage world introduced me to the wellness world, and as I started to implement those things in my personal life I was able to understand how they all work together to increase over all wellness. The road to success in this industry has not been a short or easy one. There have been many people who said my business was likely to fail due to the industry being over saturated , our location, or the current date of the economy, but I have continued to grow. I started off as a mobile massage therapist and later went from renting one small room to now being located on my own storefront .
One of the most difficult times I have experience as a business owner was during the Covid. I did not know if my business would sustain its self massage. Therapist were unable to work, and people were afraid to go out, let alone be in a small facility what people are touching you, but after some time of deep prayer, God told me to go back to work when the time was right and he always knows best because every one of my clients returned and I realize that people needed wellness services more now than ever before because we need to practice our self-care, and I mental health . Massage is not just a luxury. It is a lifestyle just like fitness. It is a way to restore and rejuvenate your body and to relax your mind for mental clarity, and I am so grateful to be a place where people can come and receive this as one of our services.
I am very grateful to be able to help people on a daily basis..
Putting training and knowledge aside, what else do you think really matters in terms of succeeding in your field?
One of the most helpful things I possess is my ability to be consistent in my vision for my business. There have been times where I was unable to spend as much time working on my business and growing my businesses I would like, but the vision never changed. I always knew what the goal was. At times the road has got quite lonely and hard, but I know the vision that God has giving me and I consistently work towards it.
Any advice for growing your clientele? What’s been most effective for you?
I take pride in treating every client like they are my only client. I am make sure that I do my very best to make my clients feel special so that they feel better than they did when they came in the front door. Mist of my clients tell their friends and family, and that is how my clientele has grown throughout the years.
