We recently connected with LaShae Settles and have shared our conversation below.
LaShae, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Risk taking is something we’re really interested in and we’d love to hear the story of a risk you’ve taken.
Some entrepreneurs start out with a full plan. Everything is mapped out, funds have been stored and raised, marketing campaigns are mapped out, and inventory is stocked up. I don’t fall into that category.
I started my entrepreneurial journey back in 2013 at the age of 20. I had no idea what I was doing. I was in college, working two part time jobs, and I needed a creative outlet.
I started selling handmade earrings I learned to make from a YouTube video, created a simple website, and launched. Who knew me not knowing what I was doing would later lead me to quit my full time job in 2017 right before my 24th birthday to pursue more of “not knowing what I was doing” full time. I just simply believed in me.
I spent countless hours up at night praying, researching, trying things, and if any real entrepreneur be honest that’s what it’s all about. We have our plans we create but it’s all about taking risks, trial, and error and figuring out what works.
The beauty of it all is through my journey as the owner and curator of an amazing fashion brand I’ve been blessed with the wisdom and knowledge I get to share and have been sharing with other current and aspiring women entrepreneurs since 2016.
Through Instagram only as a business coach I curated a community of 5,000+ women who follow for business mentorship and counsel.
Through Facebook my boutique has a community of 3,000+ followers and have been blessed to be in multiple fashion shows around the world.
Sometimes you won’t have all the answers and resources but use what you have, be willing to always be a student, accept all possibilities, pursue what you want to see, and watch it play out in your favor through commitment and consistency.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
My name is LaShae Settles. I’m from the little town of Wilson, NC also known as 252 and a current Wake county resident.
For as long as I can remember I’ve always had a love for passion and fashion. Always dressing up and coordinating even as early as 8 years old.
That love for coordination would later allow me to land a job on the spot at a retail store which cultivated the love even more while introducing me to a specific love for it, retail.
I now run a women’s boutique, The FaShaenista Files offering clothing, shoes, and accessories to women all over the US.
That knowledge has allowed me to curate an online business community called TFF Academy where I coach, train, and assist current and aspiring entrepreneurs with branding, marketing, sales, and social media strategy.
I am most proud of the fulfillment that comes with knowing you’ve just helped another woman gain more confidence in herself, her image, and her ability to do great things.
We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
One lesson I’ve had to learn in entrepreneurship is done is better than perfect or incomplete.
Many times we won’t release or do things because we don’t feel it’s perfect just yet but that usually delays us into never launching.
Even apple release new products with issues and they tweak it along the way and release updates and new instructions.
I view my creations and offerings the same. Entrepreneurship is much like on the job training. You can research and read all the modules and trainings but some things don’t click until you’re in the field working with your hands. That’s the time you really learn what works, what doesn’t, and improve accordingly but you can’t be afraid of that and what that looks like.
You only become an expert through exploration.
How did you build your audience on social media?
Social media is an Avenue every entrepreneur should be taking advantage of and especially video content. It allows you to create campaigns for your business that will allow you to reach people and places you may not have otherwise or that would’ve taken a much longer time.
For anyone looking to build a social media presence don’t overthink your branding or having the perfect feed. Don’t overwhelm yourself with mastering posting at the perfect time. Just get started and be consistent. Watch your analytics and analyze your results and build a plan from there but you have to get started.
People can’t support or patronize a business they never see. A business with no content is a business that doesn’t exist.
