We were lucky to catch up with LaShae Angela recently and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, LaShae thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Let’s jump right into how you came up with the idea?
For Christmas in 2019, I asked my fiancee for a Canon Powershot camera so that I could take photos of our son. Our son has autism and doesn’t like to stand still for photos, so I thought I’d try my hand at a motion camera. Once I began taking photographs of my son, I realized I had a really good eye for photography. After about a year of taking photographs of my son, family and friends began asking me to take photographs of them. This fueled me to learn more than I already had out of fear of messing up. During the pandemic, I had nothing else to do so I took classes online and invested in photography gear. It was very hard changing careers and becoming my own boss but I can’t say that I regret it. Going from a nursing career and making a complete change to a business owner was so worth it at the end of the day. Hard but certainly worth it.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
As a Portrait Photographer, Many clients come to me because they want to see themselves in a different light or commemorate a special moment in their lives. I do this because of the MOMENTS. It’s the moment my clients see their photos and cry tears of joy because they never thought themselves that flattering. It’s the moments my clients share with their families as they’re laughing and smiling through a family shoot. It’s the moments that my clients make one of the photos I took their profile photo on social media lol. All of these moments help me to provide a service outside of what most look like. I care, more about my clients and their likes and needs in photography and that’s what sets me apart from the rest.
We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
In this business, I unlearned a lack of patience and risk-taking. See, in order to start a business you must take risks and be willing to start out in the red. Unless something is handed to you, no business starts off in the green. It took much investing and praying that I didn’t spend all of my money for anything. It even took over a year and a half to see any real gains in my business. When you go from a career making decent money to starting out on your own it is very scary and not fun to consider making risks. Most people actually miss their opportunities out of being too afraid to take risks. For myself, it was very hard but I got there and now I’m watching it all pay off.
Looking back, are there any resources you wish you knew about earlier in your creative journey?
Early in my journey, I wish I would have known about the PPA (Professional Photographers of America). They provide thousands of classes, insurance for all your camera gear, and an experience of a lifetime once a year at the Imaging USA conference. I did not know about the PPA until 2021 when I went to my first Imaging USA conference. I wish I would have because I might have saved myself some time and money on courses and insurance.
