We were lucky to catch up with Lasalle Grandeur recently and have shared our conversation below.
Lasalle, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. We’d love to hear about when you first realized that you wanted to pursue a creative path professionally.
I knew I wanted to pursue being an artist when I realized this was an important outlet for expressing myself. But not only that, it’s also a way I can convey my thoughts and feelings to be understood. I thank artists like Kid Cudi and Childish Gambino for helping me find this part of myself by sharing their art with the world. They both saved my life in a way, so in my own way, I would love to do the same for people who listen to my songs.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I would say I’m an artist that doesn’t like doing one thing. I go with what I feel, and that’s why I’m able to do so many different sounds and make them all mesh together. I got into doing music thanks to my friends in high school and our mentor, Defcee. We used to just write every day and challenge each other to get better. Eventually, when I graduated, I started going to Young Chicago Authors (Open Mic) and got connected with a lot of my peers, and from there, it was history. And now, today, you have LaSalle Grandeur.

What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
The most rewarding thing for me is people telling me they love my message and they don’t feel alone after hearing my songs. Some people have even told me I’ve saved their lives, and that’s one of the main reasons I started this craft and fell in love with it. I truly hope I can keep doing that with my music because of how much thought I put into each song. I love that people can relate to me.

Do you think there is something that non-creatives might struggle to understand about your journey as a creative? Maybe you can shed some light?
I feel my journey is a simple one, and I think anyone can understand it. But in case some might not. I just want to help free others from mental burdens by being my true self. Depression, Anxiety, etc, because I go through the same, and I feel peace when I listen to amazing emotional music. So, as long as I’m staying true to my heart and can make others smile and feel peace, then I’m doing what I feel is right.
