We were lucky to catch up with Larry Robinson recently and have shared our conversation below.
Larry, appreciate you joining us today. Are you happy as a creative professional? Do you sometimes wonder what it would be like to work for someone else?
I am happy as an artist. It’s not all sunshine and rainbows , but through building a career using the talent , I’ve learned progress is through determination and also consistency. With getting customers I mostly rely on my skill, but I heavily rely on customer promotion. It’s true that building a career based on talent It’s customers that will bring other customers. With advertising your work to get certain projects only thing that board looks at is the quality of your work , that also determines prices and whether you got the project or they are going to choose a different creative / artist. A regular job wasn’t a focus of mine due to the fact that I’m not a person to punch a clock , when the job have to be done at a certain time I can’t leave it for someone else to do , nor do I want to come back to it at a later time. Being an artist I have inspired people that if you do what you love the right circle will come to you, the right energy you will embrace. I’m not saying if you have a regular job that you should just quit to become an artist , my advice would be to stick with the job and do your passion whether it be food , dancing, musician etc. Keep your job until the right circle finds you . I’m just not good with them because I’ve met people who are passionate and happier than people with regular jobs. With all my customers so far , those who work for themselves have a better state of awareness and also send positive reviews and also other customers to my business which I do appreciate highly and I do the same for them because I do understand that promotion is key to success with everything. It’s just unlocking your inner potential and opening doors diversity to yourself and who knows what’s on the other side.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I got into the industry by accident believe it or not. I didn’t think people would pay me to draw or design but I was very wrong . First starting my skill level wasn’t as great as it is now , my technique has improved, my time management is way better as well. I draw portraits, I do original pieces that can be purchased through my social media accounts and also if any inquires I can be contacted via email. I do customized apparel such as shirts , pants, shoes. I design logos, I do murals. Basically as a creative/artist if you want it designed and you like my work let’s do business. I’m most proud that my skills are getting better. As long I continue , I know they are going to be better in the near future and I will be able to be getting booked for more opportunities.
What can society do to ensure an environment that’s helpful to artists and creatives?
In my view society needs to recognize that an artist is a person as well. I’m not speaking about the masses I’m speaking about the minority that always has the negative impact on someone’s craft and telling them they should get a regular job when being an artist is already hard enough because there is already competition. Starting a career in art newcoming artists are basically timid to try to get projects due to the arena they are stepping in . I would want everyone to be comfortable because no recognition but a big talent can land you a small project in a big way .
Is there mission driving your creative journey?
I would say that my mission is not only to get better , get notarized and more stable, it’s also to have someone who is scared to follow their dreams to take the first steps in that direction. Someone might say just from reading about me and checking my work it inspired them to be happy . Another mission of mine is a change of scenery art doesn’t really thrive, unless it’s fashion but by the time it catches on they might need to find another artist .
