We recently connected with Larry Dial Jr and have shared our conversation below.
Larry, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Parents play a huge role in our development as youngsters and sometimes that impact follows us into adulthood and into our lives and careers. Looking back, what’s something you think you parents did right?
When we were kids my mom had polio and couldn’t prepare meals for us, so her and my grandmother taught us basic breakfast foods to prepare while she was down. After she was well my dad saw a flair for my skill and began teaching me and my brother on the bbq grill at 8 years old. He was tough when teaching and while other kids were playing outside we were learning the family business. My parents are the reason Dials Catering was born. They taught me everything I know.

Larry, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Good food, good conversation, good people is our motto. Welcome to Marys kitchen where you sit, eat, and become family. My grandmother Mary taught us food brings people together like family. The care we take into building our flavor profiles is unique and sets us apart from others. Our sides can stand alone as the main course!
I’m the most proud of the business relationships and bonds we have built thru food. The main thing I want people to know is where you start dosen’t determine where you finish.

Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
The year was 2020. The dreaded year of covid. We were renting a kitchen space for catering and I got covid and was hospitalized for 8 days. It almost took my life. The kitchen closed abruptly due to poor infrastructure and management and they told us to move out. Soon as I got better we moved out and began preparing meals for a football team on a weekly basis. We also began meal prep for Emory hospital employees . This kept us afloat during the pandemic and it boosted the catering services to the next level. When the pandemic ended Dials Catering was better than before!

Do you have any insights you can share related to maintaining high team morale?
Maintaining high morale to me is straight up honesty. Including your team in conflict resolution and allowing them to assist in problem solving gives them a sense of belonging. Yes share the success and struggles with your team to let them know that they are an important part of the business infrastructure. While the failures are mine the successes are ours. When your team feels valued and trusted and a cohesive team equals success!
