We recently connected with Larry Cool Jr and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Larry thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Can you talk to us about how you learned to do what you do?
Just being a sponge & soaking up everything I could from my fellow peers in this field & transformed the basics I learned into my own sound. I honestly don’t think I could’ve sped up the process I needed to learn slow & study the fundamentals so I think time actually helped me. I think just listening & being around the music was most essential & honestly I don’t think any obstacles have stood in the way of me learning more because I continue to learn things daily just trial & error mostly
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I got into producing Chicago Footwork Music first by being introduced to footwork back in 96 at one of the local spots in my area called “jubilation” where I seen my first footwork battle not only was i intrigued by the dance style itself, I was more intrigued by the music behind it. Shortly after I began learning how to dance & later starting my own dance group “Triple Phaze” & after a few years of being founder & president of my own dance group I handed my title over to one of my best friends as I then got more involved into the music & wanting to become a Chicago Footowork DJ. think I’m most proud of my “project bustdown” series of tapes that have became one of the most popular titles in this genre of music to date. My motivation comes from the Chicago footworkers & all of my supporters around the world who dance to my music that keeps me going.
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
There has always been times where a person finds themselves ready to give up & call it quits but the support from my city, the chicago footworkers & dancers across the globe has kept me grounded & motivated to keep my foot to the pedal
Is there mission driving your creative journey?
My goal is to continue to push this culture forward & bring more awareness to not only chicago footowork music & the chicago footworkers but the city as a whole it’s a lot of hidden talent in this city we just need more resources to push it to a larger demographic
