We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Larry Chambliss . We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Larry below.
Hi Larry , thanks for joining us today. We’d love to have you retell us the story behind how you came up with the idea for your business, I think our audience would really enjoy hearing the backstory.
I started as a fashion stylist in 2016 but I have always loved fashion I used to style my friends in high school for birthdays and proms and parties ! in 2016 I though being a stylist was my way in to fashion , I work along side a celebrity stylist name sigourney she worked withs sky from black ink and few others . I was her assistant for a few gigs, while using instagram to put together collage of outfits . I shortly realized that being a stylist wasn’t for me but I still love fashion and wanted to be apart of the community . I begin as fashion line with my old friend of mines in 2017 we work on that line for 3 year I was more of the business and operation side while she was the designs . we begin having different creative direction we wanted to take the brand and didn’t come to agreement but to end the line . 2020 begin and was having dreams of fashion and my own line , so in feb 20 ,2020 I got my EIN and went for it . I then called my brand s6ix0e8ight for a short period of time before I change the name to june8thny , same concept using my birthday as the name but different way of spelling . I believe that I had to change my name for a better search engine. since 2021 till now I have been feature on two articles and have done many show as well as host my own show the black excellence experience with 6 other dope designers .
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I would like everyone to know that my brand is for inclusivity and confidence ! I believe I was able to express myself in fashion before I was even comfortable with who I was . my fashion since high school or even a young child I was always fly .
Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
my journey of resilience has be long from having to start over and having to find myself as a designer . my biggest problem has been finding a seamstress that understand the brand and vision and able to bring it to life . I have recently found a great team of seamstress but the journey to finding one was the harder you will find people that will over charge you and waste your fabrics while not giving you any patterns or over charging for a pattern ands sample . my best advice is to learn your business before seeking out with knowledge because you will go thought many people that will use you and not help you, now if you believe in learning the hard way then go handle business blindly .
Can you talk to us about how your funded your business?
Funding my business has been a rollercoaster because I have to work a full time job to provide the fund to help grow the business . I haven’t been the best at keeping a job due to me putting my all in to myself so years down I wouldn’t haven’t to work for anyone but myself . but I have recently had a different mindset from working the hospitality industry I believe working overnight is the key to funding your business and having time to make the moves you need to during the day . yes you may lose sleep depending how you look at it but it worth it because you have the daytime to go out and network or host events and handle all business at night you go to work to make the funds.
