Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to LaRonda LaNear. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
LaRonda, appreciate you joining us today. What’s the backstory behind how you came up with the idea for your business?
I wish I had come up with the idea of We Got It Covered long before I launched. For years I’ve hosted events for friends and family, I’d always have a plethora of food and extravagant set up’s. I even meal prepped for a few friends. One day a friend told me I should think about turning this into a business. After much thought, I came up with a plan and executed. Becoming an entrepreneur gave me the freedom of being there for my daughter more than I could working a traditional 9-5.
LaRonda, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I’m a single mom of an outgoing, vibrant 9 year old. She is the reason for starting WGIC. I wanted the freedom of dropping her off and picking her up from school, the freedom to attend school plays without asking for permission, that never sat well with me. With much hard work, trial and error, tears, and joy I’m happy to say I’m still standing and thriving 5 years later. We Got It Covered is your one stop shop for your food service needs. We offer catering, food management, and airport concession services. We aim to provide great food, made with the freshest ingredients, and the best customer experience possible when working with us. We crave an extensive resume with some of the most pristine clients in the metro area including, but not limited to The City of KCMO, the Kansas City Board of Education, Made in KC, G.I.F.T, Big Brothers Big Sisters, and C2FO. We are excited to introduce the newest concept of WGIC “Safì Fresh” is set to open at KCI March of 2023. Safì Fresh is a healthy concept, offering salads, wraps, bowls, a kids menu, cold pressed juice and more. WGIC is avid in giving back to the community. We are proud volunteers for Operation Breakthrough, KC Prep, KC connect and the Linwood YMCA. We also host a yearly event we call “Warm Up KC” where we provide free clothes, shoes, coats, hygiene products and more to those in need in our community. This is year 5 of hosting the event.
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
I believe in myself and my brand. I know that I offer the best food possible, at a great price, along with exceptional customer service. Seeing our clients smiles, and receiving praise for the food is what keeps me going. We have had multiple repeat clients. Going through the pandemic was very tough, the current food prices will also have you second guessing your career choice lol. I know that the tough times are temporary. It can’t be all roses and good times everyday. The struggle is what builds character, it makes you resilient. The tough times made me resilient, persistent and optimistic.
Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
One lesson I had to unlearn is giving up after things don’t work. When business is slow, I self reflect. What can I do better or switch up to attract more clients? Most times, people stick to the same old strategy, hoping things will change. You have to be innovative and change with the times. If what you’re doing isn’t working, self reflect.
