We were lucky to catch up with Larmarrous Shirley recently and have shared our conversation below.
Larmarrous, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Is your team able to work remotely? If so, how have you made it work? What, if any, have been the pitfalls? What have been the non-obvious benefits?
Working remotely has been great for me. I am more productive working remotely than I was in the office. Besides needing to walk the dog a few times a day, I don’t have many distractions, and I am good with scheduling, invoicing, and deadlines. I have been able to retain more long-term contracts and work with people, issues, and organizations I care about. I have also been able to spend more quality time at home and working on my personal projects as well.
As for my deejaying, I have been more selective about the gigs I will spin. This has been beneficial for me. I have been fortunate to spin some great events.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers?
I have been working as a graphic designer/art director for over half my life. I got an internship while in college and was able to learn the design programs and build my portfolio and client base. I was able to land art director positions at several magazines, ad agencies, and design for many musical artists. The biggest challenge is staying current with the latest software and being up-to-date with the design trends.
I am proud of the work I have done with organizations such as The King Center, Black Voters Matter, Closing The Gap In Healthcare, The Lowcountry Jazz Festival, Next Level Events, and working with various music artists throughout the country. I am thankful that they trust that I will work hard to creatively convey their message.
Can you tell us about what’s worked well for you in terms of growing your clientele?
I network and support my clients. So if my client has a new product, event, music, or a cause they are working on, I support it. I will work to become knowledgeable about what they are working on. This has helped me better provide visuals for them. They know I work to understand what message they are trying to convey.
I am also proud of my personal projects such as Slo*Mo Magazine and our recently launched online radio station, slomoatl.com/radio.
Is there a mission driving your creative journey?
Since I work with organizations, people, and causes I am truly interested in, my mission is to help them get their message to the masses. The same goes for my own personal projects.
