Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Lard Humungus. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Lard, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Can you talk to us about how you learned to do what you do?
I started drawing at a young age, I’ve been doing it my whole life. Once I started, I never stopped. My earliest memories involve drawing with crayons and paper while watching Pee-wee’s Playhouse. All the wacky visuals and random scenarios fueled my creativity. My biggest obstacles were the adults telling me that I would never be able to make a career of my art. I should have told them to go fuck themselves. I wish I had listened to what was in my heart, to keep practicing and pushing myself artistically. I didn’t. I slowed down because I “had to” go to college. I learned soon after graduating, that really wasn’t true. I had the talent all along. The most essentials skills for my artistic growth have been drive and determination. I feel like both came naturally for me. I love art and making art. I always want to get better at making it. Once I realized my art was a tool I could strengthen, I prioritized doing just that.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
Artistically, I am anonymous. I created a character named LARD HUMUNGUS from the planet Mega Murder. LARD was exiled here years ago to the grossest planet and the galaxy. With a pen and paper, he attempts to make the world a dumber place – one drawing at a time! Lard Humungus is the inner beast that dwelled inside my head as a child. The voice that told me to tell everyone to fuck off, but I didn’t listen. When I started to listen, he was freed from within me. I broke into the industry by posting a new piece of art on Instagram every day for a few years. Slowly gaining friends and clients. It was like a snowball effect. One job lead to another and another. Before long, I started making enough money to live. Ya see, at the beginning, I was working full-time at a tattoo shop; I was trying to break into the tattoo industry. While working there, the Lard Humungus projects just kept taking off. I realized I could quit my job at the tattoo shop and pursue my art career full-time. That was 2019. Thankfully, I’ve been living solely off my art for the past 5 years! Basically, what I want is for the world to know LARD HUMUNGUS is everything I’ve ever wanted to be and everything I’ve loved all rolled up into one disgusting mutant of an artist!
Is there mission driving your creative journey?
I want Lard Humungus to be an addition to the weird characters that we have from the past. I still want to create and draw, but I also want Lard to be a part of pop culture in the same vein as Pee-wee Herman, Ernest, and Elvira! Those weird, over-the-top characters were a part of everything from TV, commercials, movies, toys, and books! I want to use my art as well as my ability to perform to make people laugh again, to make people love silly things again. I want Lard to inspire people to draw, be stupid, have fun, and not take themselves too seriously.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
The most rewarding part of being an artist is making people laugh with my art. If I can make one person chuckle to themselves and take them out of whatever is hurting them in their lives, then I’ve done my job right. That fulfills me. Just making art, in general, makes me feel free and happy. Making people laugh is the icing on the cake! Let it be known that Lard Humungus was put on this planet to raise hell and stupidity!
