We were lucky to catch up with LaRae Day recently and have shared our conversation below.
LaRae, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today It’s always helpful to hear about times when someone’s had to take a risk – how did they think through the decision, why did they take the risk, and what ended up happening. We’d love to hear about a risk you’ve taken.
“The year 1519, Hernán Cortés arrived in the ‘New World’ with 600 men, and upon arrival, made history by ‘burning his ships.’ This sent a clear message to his men. There is no turning back! Two years later, he succeeded in his complete conquest of the Aztec empire.” –
As a working runway model, I’ve learned that, at times, in order to achieve success in this life we must “burn the boats”so to speak.
For my first London Fashion Week, I purchased a plan ticket and lodging accommodations before being casted for a single designer at London Fashion Week.
New York Fashion Week came and went as usual, and the closer my flight to London approached, the more anxious I grew… but, my motivation and determination to walk in London Fashion Week grew with equal fervor.
I didn’t give up because I COULDN’T give up. Whether or not I believed in myself at that time, I had invested in myself with my time, money, and energy, so there was no turning back. I found myself making every call and leveraging every avenue with a fire of sheer determination the first day of London Fashion Week.
I was invited to walk in my first London Fashion Week show just hours before call time within 24 hours of landing in London, and after getting my heels in the door, I was casted for 2 more designers!
Sometimes all we need is to take a chance on ourselves. Burn the boats, and you’ve already determined the end of your story!

LaRae, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
Hi there! My name is LaRae Day, and I am a digital content creator, social media influencer and strategist, professional model, global traveler, certified life coach, and entrepreneur.
As a social media influencer and content creator, brand partners I have worked with in the past include Prada, Ralph Lauren, Sephora, Victoria’s Secret, Disney, Marvel Studios, D.C Comics, and Hallmark.
As a runway model, I have walked in New York Fashion Week, Los Angeles Fashion Week, Miami Swim Week, London Fashion Week, Milan Fashion Week, and Paris Fashion Week.

Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
Consistency, consistency, consistency! Engaged and loyal audiences don’t appear overnight, but the time will pass anyways. Would you rather wake up a media mogul in 5 years, or still wishing you’d consistently hopped on social media trends 5 years ago?

Looking back, are there any resources you wish you knew about earlier in your creative journey?
I am a strong advocate of finding a mentor who is equally passionate about your pursuits. This could be someone who is naturally invested in you because they see a past version of themselves, someone you hire in a strictly transactional capacity, or even a rekindled relationship with a family member, friend, or acquaintance. (I also recommend honing in on developing and leveraging the skill of networking when finding a mentor. Typically, everyone in your current circle knows someone who can support you on your journey!)
Oftentimes, the answers to the seemingly insurmountable obstacles we face as entrepreneurs are within our grasp, and all we need is someone who has walked this road before to point them out to us.
