We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Lara Carter a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Lara , thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today What do you think matters most in terms of achieving success?
After 10 years in business as a family photographer, I’ve learned that being successful comes from more than just taking beautiful images. You need to truly love it and have a passion for serving others. It requires setting clear goals to guide growth, creating boundaries to protect both your creative energy as well as creating a work-life balance. It’s a lot of work because you wear all the hats. I personally am very customer service driven and I think if you take care of your clients from the start of that inquiry, it guides your path to success! I always think of what I would want from a session and try to instill that into my business. So grateful to all my clients for trusting me to capture their family adventures!
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
Hi everyone, I’m Lara! I am a lifestyle photographer in the Katy, TX area. I specialize in maternity, newborn, families, high school seniors, and even headshot branding. I have always loved taking and looking at photos so when my boys were born I decided I was going to learn to take beautiful images. From there I played around and just tried to capture everything I didn’t want to forget! Photos take you back to a feeling, a moment that you can’t get back, and that’s what makes it so special. You’re freezing the past so you can remember it in the future! Those chubby baby hands, or baby legs with rolls, toothless grins, and even those teenage smirks are so special. My goal is to create a space where families can be themselves and let their giggly, silly, sweet selves shine! I am most proud to say that my business last year was 90% repeat clients or word or mouth referrals and that brings me so much joy!
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
Theres nothing more rewarding as a photographer than capturing the beautiful journey of growing families. Starting from the glow of maternity sessions, to the sweet first moments of newborns, to the proud smiles of high school seniors. I love seeing the kids grow each year while creating memories for the whole family to look back on and see how much they are all loved by each other.
What’s worked well for you in terms of a source for new clients?
To this day, my favorite and best source of new clients is word of mouth. I am so honored when a family shares my information over to their friends and family. Genuine referrals from happy families, to me, speak louder than any advertisement ever could.
