We were lucky to catch up with Laquita Langhorn recently and have shared our conversation below.
Laquita, appreciate you joining us today. Can you walk us through some of the key steps that allowed you move beyond an idea and actually launch?
Deciding to go from author to screenwriter was the most difficult transitions to execute. Having to choose which connections to make, which career routes to take, and which stories to tell were my biggest obstacles. In order to overcome those obstacles, I had to do extensive research, put myself around industry professionals that were doing what I wanted to do, and take financial risks. I created a business plan. Then I set long & short term goals. And I started making connections on social media, in person events, and supporting other productions. I chose to produce my first screenplay, direct it, and pitch it for distribution. Eventually, actors started approaching me to cast in my films. And after every production, I listed the issues I had and came up with solutions to overcome them in the next film production. Being consistent, staying positive and showing others I cared about their advancement in their careers is what continues to keep my idea of being a screenwriter thriving.

Laquita, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I’m LaQuita Langhorn an award winning screenwriter from Memphis, Tn. I direct and produce feature films that range from comedy to thriller, romance to drama. I have produced 13 feature films, 6 are currently streaming on streaming platforms such as Tubi, Amazon Prime Video, Roku, Peacock, and more. I’m an organized and fast paced director. I also edit, supervise music, scout talent, and handle delivery tasks for productions. I’m a traveling director so most of my films are shot in various cities. My brand is to give actors a voice and provide unique stories for the my audience. I also focus on how important filming is and how therapeutic it can be. I promote mental health awareness with my brand and through my stories. I’m most proud of my perseverance, my consistency and willingness to learn along the way. I’ve won screenplay awards from festivals and been nominated 3 times for a thriller film “The Housekeeper”.

Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
A moment of resilience was when I produced a film in Detroit, and the property owner kicked us off the property. My entire shooting schedule was based on that property because of its versatility, but once that happened, I was out of a deposit, had to find the money to rebook new locations, and deal with actors that were uneasy about the situation. I felt defeated for a second but knew I had to get through the production regardless. So I rebooked another property, updated the actors because of time changes, still maintained a positive attitude, hooked up with locals for help with property use, and still direct actors to get through scenes. We finished filming at 3am and had to get back up to film at 7 am. I refused to give up. I didn’t care what it took, and I used that experience to change my production guidelines and location scouting.

Are there any resources you wish you knew about earlier in your creative journey?
I wish I knew about community and how important it is to have a community that believes in your dreams. It helps to surround yourself with those that think like you. It also helps you hold yourself accountable when you have connected with hard working individuals like yourself.
