We caught up with the brilliant and insightful LaQuam Easter a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
LaQuam, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today We’d love to hear the story behind how you got your first job in field that you currently practice in.
My first job in the esthetics field, believe it or not, was/is my current business: FreshFace. I started my business a brief two months after I graduated from Paul Mitchell. I was offered a room to rent while still attending school, but as an independent contractor, which meant I had to create my own LLC and here we are! Almost 4 years later!
I was nervous, but determined; and knew I had the creativity, knowledge and maturity to not only execute it but excel in it. I am still extremely happy with my decision. I love what I do.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
I’ve always wanted to be of service. I’ve also always had a leader/ go-getter mentality. These qualities encompass me and my business today. I’m La’Quam, 26, the owner of FreshFace. based out of Connecticut. I am a 4-yr licensed esthetician in the states of CT and NY, specializing in professional skin treatments as well as full body waxing. I have a skincare line named after my brand. I’m also a skincare educator with the company Dermalogica!
For my clients, skincare is personal. Not only am I treating their outside appearance, but I’m also healing something inside too. Each visit is not only a service, but an experience where we get to share our thoughts, secrets, laughs, and cries. I love making connections with people, and helping make their skin healthy at the same time!
Any advice for growing your clientele? What’s been most effective for you?
Connecting with a marketing/social media manager is my biggest advice. Even as a very creative person myself, there’s always beauty in having another set of eyes and ears; especially when they’re trained in the profession. After doing your research, it’s an investment worth considering for growth.
How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
There’s a few things. It starts with consistency. When you’re consistent with your social media presence, but also with your work ethic and results, then that’s what you’re known for.
You also have to be creative. If you’re trying to fit in and be like everyone else, that’s exactly what you’ll be. So how could anyone remember you or how could you build a “reputation” if it’s the same as everyone else? Everyone says it, but being yourself goes a long way.
