We were lucky to catch up with Laphelle Taylor recently and have shared our conversation below.
Laphelle, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. What did your parents do right and how has that impacted you in your life and career?
My parents always kept me busy as a child. Whether it was sports, band, or church, I had little idle time to get into trouble or develop bad habits. My father’s discipline taught me the importance of hard work and dedication, while my mother’s entrepreneurial spirit instilled a desire to take risks and pursue my passions. Combining these values, I have become a successful business owner with a strong work ethic and a willingness to take calculated risks. My parents even supported my decision to transfer to an art school, recognizing my passion for the arts and understanding the importance of pursuing my interests. Their support provided me with the encouragement and resources needed to succeed and pursue my dreams.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I am a Sound Engineer and Record Producer by trade. I began as a playing instruments in thee school band which led me to composing music. In 2010 graduated college with a degree in Digital Audio Production and Design from the Living Arts College in Raleigh, NC. After that I produced and engineered for signed and aspiring artist at various studios.. After gaining years of experience and a substantial clientele, I founded Soul Lab Studios in Greensboro, NC. Since opening, we are one of the premier recording studios in the state. I set out to provide a unique space for musicians and artist to create in a industry standard facility that is the perfect marriage of quality affordability.
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
I was told no many times I began looking for a commercial space to open the studio. I believe I called or visited over 50 locations. They were very hesitant to lease to me because I didn’t have a commercial renting history and because of the traffic that comes with a recording studio. I wasn’t discouraged because no matter how many no’s you receive, it only takes one yes which gave me the opportunity to open Soul Lab Studios.
What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
I grew up always hearing the phrase “work hard”.. Although this is true, once I opened a business I had to adopt the idea of working smart over working hard. Not to say that Im not a hard worker, but in order to properly manage the business I had to take a step back and become more efficient. For example, I hire people to do task that would take time away from the time that it takes to grow the business.
