We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Lansana Sesay a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Lansana, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Let’s kick things off with talking about how you serve the underserved, because in our view this is one of the most important things the small business community does for society – by serving those who the giant corporations ignore, small business helps create a more inclusive and just world for all of us.
I was born in Freetown, Sierra Leone. Where the land and people are beautiful, but opportunity for growth is limited. Our community is close knit, we pride ourselves in tribe and family. My grandfather had a total of eight wives, so essentially I was raised by a village. My family is big and diverse, we always make sure everyone is taken care of. Growing up I was blessed. My aunt adopted and raised me with her three sons. I went from escaping the Civil War in Sierra Leone, to living in a big house in Bowie, MD. These two contrasting spectrums of life helped nurture a giving nature. Memories of not having much birthed humility and care. Being at a position of accessibility, to gain success or growth never thought of before, helped honed a bigger picture at hand. Life is bigger than me. It’s bigger than my trials and tribulations. I can only go as far as the Will of God moves me. If I’m not aligned with his Will, I’m just lukeworm. I wholeheartedly believe my calling is to the people. I don’t know whether small or big, but his Will for me is to help the needy.
Fast forward, I am grateful Winner’s Circle is embodying that Will. We try our best to highlight the stories of trailblazers in the community that don’t have a voice. We also host/cover community based projects. These projects include: networking events, pop up events, giving back to the homeless, giving back to children in the community, deescalating poverty, etc.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?

What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
I believe individualism and transparency helped built our reputation. Although podcasting is a popular market, we created a sense of uniqueness to ours. We focus on the needy, which outnumbers the rich. The goal was to not just talk about about our problems but help change them. To help those around us with similar experiences.
What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
I had to learn quickly to take my time with life, goals, and people. Sometimes I get too tunnel vision, and forget how beautiful the process is. The mistakes, the accomplishments, I started relishing each moment. As long as you are consistent and driven, you will see your dreams come true. Other than that, take your time and have fun. Make each memory the best, without worry about the next one.
