Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to LaNique Monae. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
LaNique, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. How did you learn to do what you do? Knowing what you know now, what could you have done to speed up your learning process? What skills do you think were most essential? What obstacles stood in the way of learning more?
Being a musician and artist took time and years of dedication and work. I learned so much growing up by being eager to learn from those around me who I looked up to. From my grandmother to my cousins to my mentors and the list goes on.
If I had the knowledge back then that I know now, I would have stuck with consistency on content and being able to reach those that didn’t know me. It was when I decided to spread my gift to the world is when my life changed for the better.
The most essential skills for me are communication, practice, dedication and mental breaks. Being able to have all of these components help me daily with the things I attempt and create.
My biggest obstacle was my own thinking. I had to get out of the mindset of trying to be perfect. Knowing that I am human and that I make mistakes, allowed me to value the person I am. I am a work in progress and learning from my flaws create the best me that I can be.
LaNique, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Well family, I am LaNique Monae. I am originally from Chicago and now I reside in Atlanta. I have been in the south since 2014. I became a musician at the age of 11 and I haven’t stopped since then. It was my grandmother’s teaching on the piano at home that started my ear and my aunt throwing me on the organ one Sunday morning at church. I released my first single in 2019 titled “You Let Me Win Again”. I was so excited to release some music because I was writing music for years and never thought I was good enough to do it. I am so happy to have met Johnathan Nation because he was my first producer.
Coming from a background of singers and musicians, I had a lot of structure. Discipline is what helped me and is continuing to help me in this journey that I am on. I have traveled this country over the years and I am celebrating 20 years of music ministry this year of 2022. With God, I will continue to flourish and release the sound he has cultivated in me.
I am most proud of my perseverance and dedication to my craft, career and gift. I don’t take any of this for granted and I am grateful to God for choosing me to be a representation of him.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect of being who I am is showing others that they can do it too. Being a female in a male predominant arena is a task in itself. Seeing the messages from women saying thank you for being an inspiration tells me that I am doing the right thing. I am being a light to those who need it the most.
How did you build your audience on social media?
Social media changed my musical career for the better. It took for me to consistently post and for one video to reach people all over the world. Since then I have been continuously creating material that the people want to hear and see.
