Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Landrea Haynes. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Alright, Landrea thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. We’d love to go back in time and hear the story of how you came up with the name of your brand?
Thanks for having me, I appreciate you for taking time out to interview me.
Naming my brand was definitely a journey filled with thought and reflection of why I joined the beauty industry. I wanted a name that encapsulated the essence of what I do and the experience I wanted to offer to my clients. After much brainstorming and soul-searching, “The Pretty Doctor” emerged as the perfect fit. It represents a space where beauty and therapy intersect and speaks to the heart of what I do and the experience I strive to create for each and every client. The journey began with a deep dive into what I wanted my brand to represent which is to reflect the idea of transformation, both inside and out. I knew I wanted to focus not just on the superficial aspects of beauty but also on the emotional and psychological well-being of my clients.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
My name is Landrea Haynes, and I’m originally from the vibrant city of New Orleans, Louisiana. As a mother, I found myself not only styling my own hair but also experimenting with different looks for my daughter, friends, and family. This experience ignited a passion within me to pursue a career in cosmetology, where I could channel my creativity and love for beauty into a profession. In 2012, the beauty industry led me to Atlanta, Georgia. It was there that I immersed myself in the art of hair and realized that my journey was about more than just perfecting styles, it was also about self-discovery and personal growth.
In pursuit of both inner and outer beauty, I made the bold move to Los Angeles, California in 2018. I learned the importance of self-love and acceptance, which transformed me not only as a beauty artist but also as a person. Through discovering my own journey, I gained a deeper understanding of the transformative power of beauty and how it can uplift our spirits from within. Today, as the founder of The Pretty Doctor, I’m committed to sharing this message of self-empowerment and positivity with my clients, creating a space where beauty is not just about looking good, but also about feeling confident, empowered, and loved.
Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
Throughout my life, I’ve faced numerous challenges and obstacles that tested my resilience and strength. Growing up, I struggled with self-love and acceptance, often feeling the need to conform to others’ expectations and identities. This made forging genuine connections and finding my own path a daunting task. However, despite the internal struggles and external pressures, I remained steadfast in my journey. As a single mother at the age of 18, I was faced with the immense responsibility of providing for my daughter while navigating the complexities of adulthood. Juggling multiple jobs and striving to be the best mother and role model I could be, I encountered countless setbacks and hardships. Yet, through it all, I refused to let life’s challenges define me. Instead, I embraced each obstacle as an opportunity for growth and resilience. In my career, I encountered similar challenges, from mastering new techniques to overcoming self-doubt. However, by God’s grace, unwavering determination, faith, and a commitment to continuous learning and improvement, I persevered. Each setback became a stepping stone towards honing my craft and becoming the best version of myself. Through it all, I’ve learned that true resilience isn’t just about bouncing back from failure – it’s about embracing every experience, both positive and negative, as an opportunity for growth and self-discovery. It’s about recognizing the power of self-love and acceptance as the foundation for personal and professional success.
What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
A lesson I had to unlearn was overcoming shyness, especially in the beauty industry. Growing up, I was naturally reserved and often found it challenging to speak up and assert myself, both personally and professionally. However, as I pursued my career, I quickly realized that shyness was a barrier to connecting with clients and delivering exceptional service. The backstory to this lesson revolves around my journey of self-discovery and growth within the beauty industry. Initially, I struggled to overcome my timid nature, fearing judgment and rejection from others. I recognized the importance of communication, connection in creating transformative experiences as well as making a conscious effort to break out of my shell, and to speak confidently and authentically engage with clients. This involved actively listening to my clients needs, understanding their unique backgrounds and stories, and using my communication skills to build trust and rapport. As I shed my inhibitions and embraced a more assertive approach, I discovered a newfound sense of freedom and empowerment, both as a hairstylist and as an individual. Another lesson I had to unlearn was self-doubt and negative self-talk. For years, I struggled with feelings of inadequacy and imposter syndrome, doubting my abilities and questioning my worthiness. However, I realized that these self-limiting beliefs were holding me back from reaching my full potential and impacting my ability to empower others.
Through introspection and self-reflection, I embarked on a journey of self-love and acceptance, challenging negative thought patterns and replacing them with affirming beliefs. I learned to celebrate my strengths, embrace my uniqueness, and cultivate a mindset of resilience and confidence. By letting go of self-doubt and embracing self-empowerment, I not only became a better hairstylist but also a leader of inspiration for those around me. In essence, unlearning shyness and self-doubt has been instrumental in my personal and professional growth, allowing me to step into my power as a entrepreneur, mentor, and advocate for self-love and authenticity.
