We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Landen Purifoy a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Landen, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Do you think your parents have had a meaningful impact on you and your journey?
My parents are amazing, they always made sure I was kept busy with extracurricular activities, whether it was sports, marching band, or playing keyboard at our church. I didn’t realize until starting my content creator career, but I never had a day off. Every weekday, I was at school from 7am to 7pm since we had marching band practice every weekday except Wednesday, from when school let out until 7pm. Then on those Wednesdays, I would play keyboards at our church’s evening service. Saturday was my only day to work, so I’d pick up some ours at my part time job, then get up early Sunday morning to play in the band for 3 more church services. My parents never made me feel like I had a lot on my plate, but also never pressured me to stay with the extra activities I was doing. This schedule became very normal to me. When It came time to be a content creator, I naturally became very scheduled, and started to realize that my time management skills came very quick into work.
Landen, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
My name is Landen Purifoy, I’ve been a music niche content creator for over 4 years, gaining over 20 million fans over all platforms. I love to make entertaining content that gives joy to all people across all ages. I’ve always strived to bring joy through my videos, and find an angle to reach people who might not generally care about music, or the music scene. Some of my most popular videos have me recreating popular songs out of house hold objects, whether that’s hitting my fist on a football, or taking a big bite out of an apple, and looping those sounds building up to playing an instrument and finishing the song! On YouTube, I test unique instruments, going to new places and learning together with my audience! I just hit 10 million subscribers on YouTube at the end of 2024, with 8.5 million on TikTok. I’m also well known for playing the musical instrument called the talk box, which is a clear tube that you put in your mouth, that then connects to your instrument of choice (usually a keyboard synthesizer) and allows you to talk or sing through the instrument you’re playing! This has led to features on songs like “Pain Killer” by Krizz Kaliko, and even having my own character in a video game called My Singing Monsters, which was one of many highlights of 2024! If you’d like top check out the videos, my handle on is @landenpurifoy on all platforms
How did you build your audience on social media?
My biggest advice for building an audience on social media, would be to stay consistent! Post every single day if you can, and if you think you can’t, that’s probably not true. You will learn from every single post that you make, so the more you post, the better your videos will get. Starting a social media journey while working a full time job, or going to school is never impossible, I did both. A huge way of going about making content that I learned is “bulk recording”. Bulk recording is when you gather as many ideas as you currently have for videos, and record them all in one day. That way, if you are busy with school, work, travel, etc, you will have a bunch of videos to post, so you can keep that consistency rolling. I wish I learned this sooner!
Are there any books, videos, essays or other resources that have significantly impacted your management and entrepreneurial thinking and philosophy?
When it comes to making content, not every answer to your questions are available in a book or on the internet. That being said, one of the most helpful resources that I’ve used for learning how to run my business, and think outside of my own box, has been meeting and being around other creators! The first time my eyes were open to this, was when I attended the yearly event “VidCon”. As soon as I walked into VidCon, I was instantly surrounded with like-minded creators going through the same challenges and successes as me. Being able to ask questions on how they got past certain things, or picking their brain on current things they’re working on, is priceless, and has changed how to go about many things in my content creation.
