We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Lance Vargas. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Lance below.
Lance, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Learning the craft is often a unique journey from every creative – we’d love to hear about your journey and if knowing what you know now, you would have done anything differently to speed up the learning process.
There was nothing I could do to speed it up really. All the mistakes were learning opportunities. My art is very unique and there was only one path to it. I just had to spend ours in the shop clearing that path. Having born grasp of design and form was essential but also a sense of spirituality and humanism to apply to that skill.

Lance, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I provide a guidepost to wholehearted living, through art, but also via facing and accepting life’s exuberance along side it’s sorrows. These are not opposites, these are the same things. I pursued this career almost out of necessity, I had been spit out of every other way to make a living and this was the one skill I could acquire that would always be mine, no one or no thing could ever lay me off or fire me or drive me so crazy that I quit. I always knew my muse had my back.

In your view, what can society to do to best support artists, creatives and a thriving creative ecosystem?
My entire career and the careers of the many artists I work with, know, and love, were all made possible because our city believed the arts were important and made it possible for us to display and sell our work in public, and they protected us. So donate to creative organizations and support creatives in any way you can. Especially if you dig their work.

Have you ever had to pivot?
You always have to pivot. You may to pivot in your themes. You may have to pivot in your approach. You may need to pivot within yourself by asking yourself what you DON’T want rather than what you DO want. There are real discoveries and breakthroughs that can be made in the negative space of our lives. You can move forward by avoiding situations that vex you. That is a crucial and important pivot which may not seem so at the time. But only in a comforting space can new ideas grow and manifest.
