We were lucky to catch up with Lance Ingram recently and have shared our conversation below.
Lance, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Going back to the beginning – how did you come up with the idea in the first place?
I’ve been fortunate to attend more than 800 concerts in my life, with most of those coming in the last 15 years. When people learn this about me they have so many questions. “What’s your favorite show?” “Who have you seen the most?” “Whos the loudest band?” and so on.
I’ve always enjoyed telling stories about the shows I’ve seen. It’s one of the most fun things as a music fan to talk with other music fanatics about who we’ve seen. I really think my favorite thing is hearing old stories of seeing bands like the Beatles and Stones in their prime.
I suppose it’s a bit self-indulgent but I wanted to share my stories too. But I didn’t want to just do a simple review of shows or come across as boastful. The beauty of live music and accumulating shows is that the experience is tied to so much more than just the actual concert. It’s a journey from the first time you heard the band. Or it’s an experience completely intertwined show/artist. I wanted to create a way to share stories that other music fans could connect with that recognize that journey and connection.
Yesterday’s Concert was a four-year project from conception to the launch of the first episode. I spent a lot of time trying to figure out how to tell these stories in an interesting way. Through trial-and-error, and countless rewrites, I finally landed on the current show where they’re highly produced and attempt to bring the shows to life. They’re more than joyless retellings. I try to hit on deeper issues about why we connect with music.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
Yesterday’s Concert is a unique love letter to live music. Presented as a concert review podcast, this show has a twist. Curated to share in-depth insight, Yesterday’s Concert provides the live concert experience in an intricate snapshot. Your guide opens the pages of his personal jam journal to take you on an odyssey of drug-hazed snack bar runs, thumping bass, and screeching guitar riffs.
Each episode leaves you with that after-concert glow that accompanies a night at a seedy dive bar show, a stadium sell-out, and anything in between. Join your host as he recalls moments that define the event, including the journey before and after, things seen and heard, alongside the immersive depth of the concert.
Created to bring the excitement of live music to your podcast feed, Yesterday’s Concert weaves an intricate snapshot of singular chords and shared human experiences. Taking inspiration from the full concert experience rather than simply being a description of the performance, featuring a mixture of concert reviews, memoirs, and philosophical musings.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
It’s honestly probably partially an addiction. I feel like chasing the muse is one of the greatest joys in life. That feeling of trying something over and over until you finally get something to land is worth all the stress and aggravations. To be able to express my creativity in a way that I’m proud of is a joy of life.
Is there mission driving your creative journey?
The goal is to connect music fanatics with other music fanatics. I hope my stories can cause people to connect with why they love their favorite artists. I hope I can give a little insight about specific tours, artists, or the live music experience. With our world so divided, concerts are one of the few places that are largely undivided. I hope that people can find that commonality to share with others.
