We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Lan Cao a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Lan, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. What did your parents do right and how has that impacted you in your life and career?
My parents migrated from Vietnam to the U.S during the Vietnam war. My dad was a navy captain and was able to bring my Mom and my oldest sister over to the states with barely anything. They were then placed in a concentration camp and then
Sponsored by a family in Amarillo, Texas and that is where I was born. My dad worked at a meat packing factory as his first job, from there he saved money and moved us to Houston, Texas when I was 8 years old. He somehow bought a business and ran it for almost 30 years and is now retired and living very well. He worked everyday from
8am to 10pm. I look back at my parents bravery for leaving the home they knew to come to a place they did not know or even speak the language. My whole career I have worked very hard and have moved up in positions. Hard work truly
Pays off and I saw this first hand with my dad.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I was an entrepreneur before I was in the industry I am in now. I owned my
Own business for a few years and the over head became to overwhelming I had to let it go. I then reached out to friends to see if they knew of any open positions and I was ready to go back and work with a company. My friends connected me with a few people and said I would be great at marketing. I took the position as a marketer for the first company and was there for almost a year. I then joined one of our competitors because I was lacking the support I needed at my last company and am very happy with this decision. It is now almost 4 years and I am
Thriving and still loving my company I am with now. I was just recently
Promoted to the director of business development for my
Company. My network has grown and my relationships with my clients have turned into friendships. I tell
My clients that the most important thing I can give them is great service, and that’s what I give them. My clients trust me and know I will take care of there clients.
What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
I think what helped me build my
Reputation within my
market is that I followed through whenever I was asked for something. If a client emailed me and I didn’t know the answer, I always would respond no matter what. I would respond in the email and say, let me find out and I’ll get right back to you.
What’s been the best source of new clients for you?
Best source of new clients is all based off referrals from my other clients.
