We were lucky to catch up with Lamar West recently and have shared our conversation below.
Lamar, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Let’s jump to the end – what do you want to be remembered for?
I want my legacy to be that I was a vessel. A vessel for God in multiple capacities. Rather I speak to people through writing, conversations, relationships, my actions, etc. I just want it to be evident that I was sent here with a greater purpose. The fleeting legacy desires that I once yearned for seem to hold less significance to me now. I dreamt of being the greatest author ever, or the greatest writer ever. And I do believe I am the best writer of my generation. But, I’ve found that many desires I had for myself turned out to be shallow things that change each time I reach a new level. Everlasting fulfillment and legacy for me, comes from serving a higher purpose. A part of that purpose is also to be a creative for people that look like me. People who come from small towns, Black people, people that are in the world but don’t subscribe to worldly beliefs. The Sinning Saints.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I am a writer, creative, and entrepreneur. I’ve been a writer for over 8 years working for BuzzFeed, XXL, Louis Vuitton, and more. I typically enjoy creating digestible content that covers topics that are entertaining or through-provoking.
I’m the owner of HDP Writings, an independent book publishing company that I founded at the age of 17. I’ve written two award winning books under my publishing imprint.
Also the owner of Sinning Saint Collection, a clothing brand. A brand that I placed on pause momentarily, as we are transitioning into creating clothing, homeware, and more accessories that will be added for future seasons.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
The most rewarding part of being a creative is seeing things come to fruition. I spend a lot of time alone thinking, planning, reflecting, and strategizing. 80% of the work for me is spending time brainstorming and planning. The next 20% is actually taking action, the action is the easy part for me. Filtering through my ideas is the most time consuming. But also seeing people receive your art well is always a great feeling.
What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
I think it’s me being genuine. I’ve launched multiple projects and ideas, but it never comes off as me trying to pitch/sell a product. I believe it comes off as me just expressing my art. I don’t reach too far outside of my zone to try an obtain monetary gain or success. I stick to what my brand is overall; my brand is me.
