We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Lamar Thomas a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Lamar thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Can you take us back in time to the first dollar you earned as a creative – how did it happen? What’s the story?
The first time I earned any revenue from my work was a breathtaking experience. When it happened I was in complete shock because it was like “Hey, someone is actually going to wear what I created”. I was always into fashion and was drawing since I was a kid. I then later took my drawings and made them into logos and designs for t-shirts. I began to form my brand and sell them.
My very first product was just a basic t-shirt with my very first logo of an eagle holding a shield with the brand name “Take Flight”. The customer was a friend of mine who absolutely loved the logo and felt it was only right to be the first to have it. I only sold it to him for $15 at the time but when I sold it I was just like “Wow I just made some money from something I was playing around with”.I instantly had chills in my body and was 1000% excited because I figured I can do this again and again. Shortly after it happened more people started noticing and I just took flight.
Lamar, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
My name is Lamar Thomas. I am from Cleveland, Ohio. Graduated from Glenville High School being a three-sport athlete (football, track/field, basketball). I was always into fashion and began drawing at the age of six. My mother was my inspiration for drawing. She used to teach me how to draw the Archie and Friends comics. Ever since then I never stopped and would just draw whenever I had free time. Then later as I got older I discovered that I can make my drawings and ideas become a more digital look.
The type of products you can get from my brand are T-shirts, jogging suits, sweatshirts, hoodies, joggers, and other accessories. We also provide a service such as a logo design. Our main goal is to continue to inspire people through our brand and do it with style. We want people to feel a part of our brand and know that we not only want to inspire but be inspired by them. This particular aspect is to get people to understand that we are a brand for the people. I can honestly say I’m proud of the awareness we are getting as a brand and the support we are getting as well. Overall we just want everyone to know and understand that The Inspirational Brand is here for them in many aspects of their life.
We want everyone who sees and wears our brand to know that our products are here to remind you all that things will work out the way they are supposed to and to continue to believe and stay inspired every day.
What do you find most rewarding about being creative?
For me, I would personally say the most rewarding aspect is seeing others wearing my work and feeling good while wearing it. I think that’s a priceless feeling and could be a captured moment that could last for a very long time. It doesn’t matter what’s going on at the time seeing people in our products and enjoying themselves is always a win.
We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
I still consider myself building. Still, as of today, I reach out to many people whether it is via email, text, word of mouth, etc. I constantly bring it up in many of the conversations I have with many of the people I have met and known, I have done many giveaways, steady promotions, and many releases of new products. The biggest and greatest advice I can give to anyone is to just stay consistent no matter what.
