We were lucky to catch up with Lamar Scales recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Lamar , thanks for joining us today. What do you think Corporate America gets wrong in your industry? Any stories or anecdotes that illustrate why this matters?
I think the industry gets it wrong when the gym facility, and bureaucracy that often comes with it, are prioritized over the clients. The people who become clients, and their wellness success, should always be the focus.
Lamar , love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
My personal fitness journey started in 2014. I was in terrible shape, but more so used my workouts as an outlet for my thoughts after my older brother passed away. Overtime, I dropped 30lbs and got into the best shape of my life.
People noticed my transformation and asked me to help them reach their goals. I started out training a few people outside twice a week. Then I held bootcamp workouts at Anytime Fitness, which was the start of my professional training career.
How did you build your audience on social media?
In the beginning of my personal fitness journey, I posted a lot of crazy plyometric pushup videos. The videos were popular and grew my following in the Louisiana, Texas and Pennsylvania areas.
The biggest advice I would give someone is to be intentional about interacting with your followers daily. It allows you to increase, and maintain, followers.
Can you talk to us about how your side-hustle turned into something more.
Yes, I had a full-time job for 11 years. I did most of my fitness training around my full-time job’s schedule, in the mornings and evenings. As my clientele grew larger, I recently made the decision to pursue my passion for training full-time, and open up my own gym.
