Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Lamar Parks Jr . We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Lamar , appreciate you joining us today. What was it like going from idea to execution? Can you share some of the backstory and some of the major steps or milestones?
Every job I’ve ever had, I worked with diligence and honor. I was so grateful to be able to provide for my daughter, that I would literally work these jobs as if I owned the business. Then one day I realized that the difference between my employer and myself was that they had an idea that they executed. They we’re no longer waiting until Friday for a pay check. Their ideas had become their paycheck. I’m working 72 hours a week, paying a baby sitter, just to get by. While I’m increasing the value of the company I worked for! That’s wasn’t enough for me to walk away from guaranteed pay check. As a single parent of a daughter, I was already facing challenges. But I have an issue with Deep Vein Thrombosis. In other words blood clots. And they have shot from my leg to my lungs. Speaking that DVTs are deadline, I sometimes find my self in a hospital room way more than I would like be. I’ve lost 2 jobs in this manner. And vowed that their wouldn’t be a third! So I executed my ideas and I haven’t looked back.
Lamar , love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
My main source of income comes from Prayed Over Paws Kennels. As an investor always looking to make my next move, the dogs found me. I provide some of the cutest puppies you will ever see. My pups are guaranteed to grow up and be nothing shy of amazing. I breed American Bullies and Micro Exotic Bullies. What sets me apart from competitors around the word is the total structure and build of my bulls. I have the smallest, best put together Micro Exotics Bullies in the world. I have some of the smallest, little muscle bound pocket American Bullies, and also some of the biggest XL Bullies in the game. Generally people say that it looks as if my dogs lift weights on a daily basis lol. I am most proud that I love what I do! I love what I do and it is a privilege to work with these beautiful animals. Also the relationships I’ve built with other breeders is priceless. I want potential clients to understand that it’s not just about owning a bully. PopK bullies are bred to wins. To not only win competitions at dog shows, but they win hearts! And you deserve a winner! Lol. I find it a duty to breed for temperament. So as I look for features for the future bulls of the camp, I pay attention to the pups attitude. How it handles the other puppies, and also how it responds to me.
We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
So here I am looking at all my dogs. I haven’t made a dime yet, so they were like little dollar signs running around peeing and pooping as they learn to be house broken. I’m also waiting on puppies. I didn’t get pregnant for the first 2 years of my initial start date. Many people encouraged me to sale all of my dogs and get a job. One of my closest friends once said to me, many investments have been a success, this one isn’t it! All the vet bills piling up, but I kept faith. I had a vision and an execution plan, and I wasn’t giving up for no one! Then we finally got pregnant. “This the one” I remember telling my family. Then my female had one puppy. Financially, this was horrible! But the quality of this one pup was amazing! I still don’t count my chicken before they hatch, but it has been a blessing to be the owner of Prayed Over Paws Kennels!
Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
I had to unlearn everything I think I knew about dogs. It’s one thing to own a pet. But it’s another situation when the pet you love is providing income. I thought I knew everything about dogs before owning a kennel. I did a lot of research and studying before making my investment, and true indeed it was totally different than what I expected it to be. First off, everyone doesn’t appreciate their “job” the way some of us do. I had a breeder who was honored to work with me on surface, but truly was only in the business for the money they could possibly make. Trusting this individual with a very particular dog, end up costing me 50k of my revenue. I knew from that very moment, that everyone breeding dogs don’t have the same vision! So I had to learn to separate business and friendship. Also I had to understand that everyone doesn’t appreciate the process in which it take to run a successful kennel.
