We caught up with the brilliant and insightful LaLo Towers a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
LaLo, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Can you tell us about a time that your work has been misunderstood? Why do you think it happened and did any interesting insights emerge from the experience?
I feel that to this day I’m still misunderstood, and I’ve come to terms with the fact that it is what it is. The main reason I feel this is because I have so many vibes and don’t necessarily have a single sound that I produce or stick to. I just vibe with the moment and go from there, even now that I’m starting to play with a band backing me, the songs sound nothing like the studio version. With a live band there’s more feel and definitely more energy. Nonetheless in being misunderstood for so long I’ve learned and remind myself daily that I’m not for everyone. The simple fact is that not everyone will understand me & I have no control over other people’s perception or emotions and that’s okay.
LaLo, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
So for starters I am LaLo Towers aka LaLo 88 Towers aka L88T (pronounced LooT) for short. I am from Port Arthur Tx and am currently based in Austin TX. I am a vocalist/ rapper and what sets me apart is that I don’t like putting myself in a bubble when it comes to my music. I’ve done boom bap, melodic, trap, drill, what I’ve been told sounds like singer song writer, light hearted and much darker music. I allow myself to flow through the work and the feeling of the moment shines through my work. My music is available across ,if not every, the majority of streaming platforms. I always tell people that if they want to know anything about me to listen to my music being that I’m as transparent as I can be and always speak from a real place. I’ve either felt it or been in close proximity of every bar I’ve laid. If y’all know nothing else about me just know that I’m a human being myself. As I grow so does my voice, perspective, and sound.
We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
I can definitely do that by sharing one of my darker chapters. In 2016 my father committed suicide, at which point I lost it and in a rage I broke my hand as I unleashed my emotions on a near by wall. Not long after that I had a falling out with the team/label that I was pursuing this music with. Following those 3 events I caught a gun charge which after months of court dates my lawyer got dismissed, thankfully. All the while my wife was pregnant with our daughter. From the time my father decided to end things to my daughter’s birth was a span of 15 months. At the time of her birth my wife and I were running a studio that was taking a loss. After going though all that I was left with a decision to either get stuck in everything I was feeling prior to my daughter’s birth or refocus and get back on it. I decided to get back to it because I refuse to pass down any generational trauma to my kid. So I took what I could to stay a float from delivering newspapers at the crack of dawn to delivering food with Favor among a few other things. From deaths, betrayals, negative bank statements, to having no traction on a dream I’ve been pursuing for the better part of my life I never gave up. It wasn’t easy and there were plenty of days that I really wanted to but somehow I found a way and kept on pushing. This particular chapter was mid 2016 through mid 2018 or so there were battles before and since nonetheless I’m confident I’ll find my way.

I don’t have enough information on the subject to really form an opinion. All I know is that change is a constant and as it has been with every innovation in our society there will be people for it and against it. Only time will tell when it’s all said and done.
