We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Lakyra Robinson. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Lakyra below.
Lakyra, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. So let’s jump to your mission – what’s the backstory behind how you developed the mission that drives your brand?
I began exploring my passion for hairstyling at a young age, experimenting with baby dolls. By 14, I had discovered my talent through working with friends and family members. In my early 20s, as a married mother of three, I found myself navigating the challenges of corporate America without clear guidance, leading to accumulating bills. I commenced providing hairstyling services from my townhouse, initially catering to children and select adults. Upon relocating to a larger residence, I established a dedicated space in my basement for hairstyling. As I gained more clients through social media, I started to generate profit. However, when my home situation evolved, I realized the need for a dedicated space where I could foster my creativity and find peace. This sanctuary would enable me to engage in one-on-one conversations, offer mentorship, counseling, and encouragement to my clients, while also receiving the same. Ultimately, I came to the realization that my home could no longer provide the necessary atmosphere, prompting my decision to establish a professional workspace.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I am the owner of Krispy Braids by Kyra. I am passionate about hairstyling because I enjoy enhancing people’s appearance and boosting their confidence. I specialize in providing hair solutions for individuals experiencing hair loss, who struggle with styling their own hair. For me, hairstyling is not just a profession, but a ministry that allows me to connect with individuals seeking a safe and welcoming space to enhance their appearance. My goal is to empower individuals with the confidence and freedom to achieve a stylish look. I offer protective hairstyles and cornrows that promote natural hair growth and relaxation. My services cater to women and children, and I aspire to expand my client base to reach a broader audience. With seven years of experience operating from my basement, I have successfully served over 200 clients annually, fostering a loyal clientele through social media and word-of-mouth referrals. In 2021, I established a small suite, which led to the expansion of my business into a larger suite within the BC Tower in downtown Battle Creek. My objective is to simplify my clients’ lives by addressing their everyday hair needs. To achieve this, I plan to offer hair extensions and products necessary for maintaining these services. By providing these additional services, I aim to save my clients time and money, enabling them to enjoy a seamless experience without needing to visit a separate beauty supply store. Ultimately, incorporating these services will drive business growth, expand my customer base, and reinforce my commitment to delivering exceptional, convenient services and support.

Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
When I lost my son in 2014, I took a break from doing hair, as braiding his hair had brought me such joy. However, my clients’ persistent requests and refusal to give up on me reignited my passion. Their loyalty and faith in my abilities empowered me to rediscover my creativity and purpose. Today, I’m proud to be Krispy Kyra, thanks to the unwavering support of my clients, who helped me transform my grief into a renewed sense of determination and drive.

Can you talk to us about how you funded your business?
I have been financially funding my business on my own, buying supplies and equipment. With my current employer, I have been able to establish revenue that has enabled me to financially sustain and grow my business. I invested funds from my business account into startup costs, fueling growth and new opportunities. Recently, I took a business management course that led me to receive a grant to help rebrand my business. This grant will help me sustain and stock my business with supplies and new equipment to ensure my clients a reliable, relaxed, and safe environment for their appointments.
