We recently connected with La’Ketta Caldwell and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, La’Ketta thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Can you tell us the backstory behind how you came up with the idea?
The story of how Keytalife LLC came to be is deeply rooted in my passion for utilizing art as a powerful tool for empowerment, healing, and raising awareness about societal issues. The birth of this creative services business was a culmination of experiences, realizations, and a burning desire to make a positive impact through artistic expression.
My journey began with a realization during my time at NYU and Southern Illinois University. While immersed in the academic and creative atmosphere, the seed was planted that art transcended mere entertainment for me. It became apparent that art had the potential to be a catalyst for change, a means to build a sense of community, and a platform to empower those who often felt voiceless.
The spark ignited within me as I witnessed the transformative power of art. Whether it was through storytelling, visual arts, or other creative mediums, I became fascinated by the journeys and stories of individuals overcoming adversity and evolving into stronger versions of themselves. This realization marked a turning point, steering me towards the path of using art as a force for positive change.
The circumstances and emotions surrounding the conception of Keytalife LLC were driven by a deep-seated belief in the ability of art to connect people, build bridges, and serve as a catalyst for healing. The desire to address societal issues and give a voice to those who may not be heard became the driving force behind the venture.
As I ventured into this creative services business, the logic behind my confidence in its success lay in the profound impact I had witnessed art have on individuals and communities. I recognized the universal appeal of art as a medium for communication, understanding, and empathy. The passion that fueled my work was not only a personal calling but also a response to a broader need for meaningful, impactful, and transformative creative services.
The journey toward founding Keytalife LLC was a convergence of my academic background, personal experiences, and a deep-seated belief in the power of art to foster positive change. It wasn’t just a business endeavor; it was a commitment to making a difference through creativity, empathy, and the profound ability of art to shape and enrich lives.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
My journey into the world of storytelling and creative expression began in my childhood, where I found inspiration from my grandmother’s tales of growing up during a challenging period for African Americans. Her stories of resilience and triumph in the face of adversity left a lasting impact on me. Witnessing how my family thrived, even during times of systemic inequality, fueled my admiration for their ability to purchase land and build a stable life.
At the tender age of three, my mother introduced me to ballet, sparking my love for the arts. Early on, I recognized the power of creativity and the boundless potential of imagination. This realization became a guiding force throughout my life.
As an adult, I discovered my knack for creative strategy, team building, and creating spaces where voices could be heard. I was often brought to the table to craft innovative solutions, turning statistics into impactful artistic expressions. My mind uniquely processes data when it is transformed into an artistic form, allowing others to grasp the significance behind the numbers.
One of the proudest chapters in my professional journey unfolded at the Boys & Girls Club under the program I initiated, “Can You Hear Us Now.” Through this initiative, I witnessed the transformative power of art as young individuals, previously unexposed to the arts, used creative expression to hold their community accountable and convey their deepest fears and sorrows. The profound impact of their transformation fueled my aspirations, leading me to embrace the title that had always resonated within me – a producer.
While I cherish my love for acting, producing work under the Keytalife umbrella allows me to tap into my passion for collaboration, community, and partnership. Recognizing that big dreams require a team, I am profoundly grateful for the individuals who have contributed to the success of Keytalife. The brand’s essence is deeply rooted in the metaphor of a butterfly’s metamorphosis—a testament to trusting the process of becoming. This narrative mirrors my own journey, and I am proud to have built a brand that embodies transformation, collaboration, and the unwavering belief in the power of creativity.
Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
The lesson I had to unlearn was the belief that, during the early stages of birthing a business, I could freely share my vision with everyone. The backstory to this realization is rooted in the understanding that not everyone will react positively or supportively. In the excitement of starting something new, I initially assumed that sharing my business aspirations with everyone around me would bring encouragement and collective enthusiasm.
However, as the journey unfolded, I came to recognize that not everyone has the same mindset or intentions. Some individuals, driven by their fears, unintentionally projected doubt onto my vision. Others, who might smile in my face, were secretly harboring intentions to undermine the very vision I was passionate about. It became apparent that during the vulnerable birthing phase, being selective about whom to share my dreams with was crucial.
In this process of unlearning, I discovered the significance of identifying those who genuinely believe in and affirm the vision. One of my steadfast allies in this regard is my friend Sherry Simmons. She possesses the unique ability to comprehend and support the vision during its conception. Sherry stands as one of my biggest cheerleaders, celebrating the very inception of ideas. Importantly, she acts as a beacon of encouragement during challenging phases, reminding me to persevere when the path seems arduous.
Navigating the entrepreneurial journey can be particularly challenging when the summit of success is obscured from view. I’ve learned the importance of curating a circle of individuals who not only share in the excitement of the beginning but also provide unwavering support when the climb becomes steep. Surrounding myself with those who sharpen and push me has become a crucial aspect of my journey, ensuring that I am propelled forward, even when the path ahead seems uncertain.
Is there mission driving your creative journey?
Absolutely, the driving mission of my creative journey is to illuminate the narratives of the voiceless and instill a sense of hope, emphasizing that every individual has a purpose or reason for being. I am committed to fearlessly addressing the issues society tends to overlook, shining a light on the power of community, and showcasing the inherent beauty that emerges amidst adversity.
Through my creative endeavors, whether it be through storytelling, visual arts, or other expressive mediums, I aim to amplify the voices of those often marginalized or unheard. I believe in using the power of art to provoke meaningful conversations, challenge societal norms, and inspire positive change. By delving into the heart of overlooked issues, I strive to foster empathy, understanding, and a collective sense of responsibility.
Moreover, I am passionate about illustrating the strength found within communities when faced with challenges. In the midst of adversity, there is often an untold beauty—a resilience and unity that emerges. I seek to capture and celebrate these stories, encouraging audiences to recognize the transformative potential that lies within collective action.
Ultimately, my creative journey is anchored in the belief that art has the ability to transcend boundaries, connect people, and contribute to a more compassionate and enlightened society. It is a mission to bring forth stories that might otherwise remain in the shadows, fostering a sense of purpose, hope, and community along the way.
