Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Lakesha Quarles. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Lakesha, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Was there a moment in your career that meaningfully altered your trajectory? If so, we’d love to hear the backstory.
Yes, of course! There are a few defining moments that has occurred during my development as a Doula. As I sit and reflect, I’ve realized that I am on the right path on this life’s journey. Helping and educating expecting moms and/or new families throughout their sacred journey is an exhilarating experience that one could probably only understand if they were truly called to do the work. This journey has not only changed my life and the way I view things, it has opened my eyes to be more understanding and aware to understand that my purpose, our purpose in life is beyond what we can see. So knowing that I’m making a difference for generations to come, I can’t do anything but smile and be grateful.
Lakesha, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I am SunFlower Doula Kesh, in layman’s terms, I’m a doula. I’m your birth room home girl, who’s there to encourage and uplift you and your partner all while providing you with evidence based information. I provide birth and postpartum services, community breastfeeding education, Placenta services and Placenta Certification training course. I also offer a variety of other services, I make Breastmilk soap Bars, Calendula and Turmeric facial bars, SunFlower nipple salve, and I provide SneakPeek gender reveal testing as I am a Certified Phlebotomy Instructor. I pride myself on learning more and forever being a student so that I can continue to provide my clients, customers, and students with the best version of myself. My why for doing so is simple, I was called to this work and I strive to continue to grow and be better than my yesterday self every day.
What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
I think that being true to myself and my why for being on this journey has helped me to become truly relatable and showing up as my authentic self has helped me stand out. I try to be intentional with putting out what I want to receive. I choose to have a good day on purpose most days, and the days where it’s chosen for me, I persevere anyway. Meaning even on my not so best days, I still show up as my best self. Showing people that I am human, lol and not some robot it makes them comfortable with wanting to work with me. I’m just an outgoing person and very talkative once you get to know me so I exude that when it comes to marketing and it has helped me tremendously.
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
“Yes! For a while now previously I always wanted to do a talk show or do something that would be fun but educational. I remember always finding an excuse to not do it because of the possible backlash. Fast forward, I randomly got on a call with one of my doula associates and she had the same dilemma. We talked about what we wanted to do, and decided to put our actions into play. I told her that we are not going to put it off anymore, we’re just going to go for it and the right audience will find us. We decided to move forward with only one day to prepare. We named the show “Talk about it Tuesday” where we would go live almost every Tuesday at 6:30 est on Instagram and discuss different birth topics. Our first episode was better than we both had expected so we decided to feature different professionals from the birth/health care world to help educate our audience. The show grew quickly and we’ve had guest from Doulas, Pharmacist, Midwives, Physician’s, Lactation consultants just to name a few to come and share their expertise with us. Starting talk about it Tuesday has opened so many pathways, leading me into my personal journey and it’s an amazing feeling, knowing that I am striving daily to do my due diligence for the community by bringing free education and resources to those who may be in search for it.”
