Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to LaKenya Kopf. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Alright, LaKenya thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. The more we talk about good leadership the more we think good leadership practices will spread and so we’d love for you to tell us a story about the best boss you’ve had and what they were like or what they did that was so great?
A great leader at Wells Fargo taught me that the best way to train someone is to approach it in the same manner of teaching a toddler to walk. If you constantly hold his/her/their hand, they will never learn their balance or build their confidence. If you never help them and they continue to fall, they will quickly become discouraged. His approach was to provide guidance and then step back, allowing us to take our “first steps” on our own. With each step, he would continue to move further back, giving us room to thrive; BUT, if we fell – he would either catch us before we hit the ground or be right there to reassure us, encouraging us to try again. Patience, sympathy, and respect were the foundation of his leadership and I will never forget it.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.

What’s been the best source of new clients for you?
My best source of new clients has been LinkedIn. While client referrals and word-of-mouth have been an invaluable resource of growth, I would contribute my steady increase of clientele initially to UpWork but that has transitioned over the years to LinkedIn. LinkedIn has been a phenomenal resource of connecting and contributing. I find I am the most authentic on that platform. Whether I am adding my own “two cents” to a LinkedIn Article, posting my take on the world via my LinkedIn Newsletter, sharing an experience via a post, or create an article summary that leads to a blog on my site – LinkedIn provides a multitude of ways to help potential leads not only find me, but learn about me, my background, my expertise, and see what I have to say. What I love most is the ability to have an “away” message that allows me to redirect potential leads that message me to my website as I do not spend a lot of time on social media – especially during business hours.

What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
While I have no way of confirming this without the input from others, I would guess my desire to help is what has built my reputation within my market. When time permits, I love to go into Facebook groups and answer questions from entrepreneurs who are struggling with tech, digital marketing, or just the experience of being an entrepreneur. I am not looking for leads, I genuinely want to share my insight because I have been there. I have been the one looking for answers in the vast depths of the ocean known as the internet and not knowing which way is up and what to do. If I can help one person figure something out – that is a win for me. The one caveat I have is that I only answer publicly in the group so that others can benefit from the answers as well. For this reason, my desire to just be a resource, to help, and not to see every opportunity as a dollar sign highlights my integrity and dedication to what I do. For some, that fosters a relationship of trust and they seek me out to work with me. For others, my knowledge gives them the reference point they need to inquire further. It also amplifies my social proof and social presence vs being a shadow lurking on the internet (i.e., a faceless search engine result).
