We caught up with the brilliant and insightful LaKendra Reed a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
LaKendra, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. We’d love to hear how you think where to draw the line in terms of asking friends and family to support your business – what’s okay and what’s over the line?
One of the greatest blessings in starting my business was the amount of support I received from family and friends. They have consistently supported by reposting images, sharing my contact information, sending inspiration photos, as well as, regularly booking sessions.

LaKendra, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Hello, I’m LaKendra of Soulistic Shots Photography. Soulistic is a name that was given by my sorority, Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Incorporated. Just as the name is important, so are the lasting impressions that I strive to create throughout each session. I initially began this journey as a hobby as I watched my mother who is also a photographer. Over the last six years, I have begun to specialize in creating lasting memories in various areas such as: portraits, events, branding, sports, and weddings. I’m proud of the growth that I’ve seen within my brand and excited for the many opportunities that are forthcoming.

What’s been the best source of new clients for you?
My best source of new clients has been client referrals. My goal has been to provide top tier service each time that I interact with clients from the time they book a session to ensure their memories are unforgettable. This guarantees that clients are satisfied and proud to share their work and most importantly proud to share my contact information for future bookings.

Any resources you can share with us that might be helpful to other creatives?
Yes, I often tell people that photography and the photoshoots are the easy parts; however running a business is tough at times. I wish in my earlier years that I had access to more resources for properly running a photography business. Soulistic Shots has grown as I have searched for available resources and through networking, but having the background knowledge would have been profound.
