Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Lakeisha Jackson. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Lakeisha, appreciate you joining us today. Let’s start with what makes profitability in your industry a challenge – what would you say is the biggest challenge?
The biggest challenge to profitability I’m seeing in my industry is people who are making films, and series without a game plan first. Where will your creation live? Who wants it? How will you market it and if you’re lucky enough to have investor backing, how are you going to not only make their money back but make some yourself? These questions are very important o ask and figure out before you type “Fade In” on that script. The leg wor=k is going to have to happen either way but thinking of this and having a clear game plan will make the journey so much less stressful.
Lakeisha, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I am the owner and executive producer behind Golden Hour Films. Golden Hour Films is a film, television, and digital media company based out of Fort Lauderdale and Miami. Our primary focus is on creating enchanting film and television series that are female-led, binge-worthy, and emotionally intelligent.
Our first series, “Shiny New Things” is available for streaming on The Fantasy Network, but will be available on various platforms later this year.
Have you ever had to pivot?
Pivoting as a creative is a skill that you will learn the hard way if you aren’t prepared. During the filming of my series, I was faced with many setbacks: locations were lost, equipment failed, actors had to leave the project…you name it, it happened. When this occurred, I was faced with only two options: quit, cry and stomp my feet, or dig my heels in. I only ever considered the first option once when it seemed like everything hit me all at once. I quickly realized it was the universe’s way of challenging me. Did I really want this and if so, how hard are you willing to fight for it?
I left with bumps and bruises but I wear the scars proudly today. I was able to rewrite within hours of change, recast roles within days, and because of the generosity of my actors and others I got new locations, equipment issues were solved, and things worked out in the end. At the time, I wasn’t prepared for everything to happen all at once. I had planned for some things and thought I would somehow be spared and be given the chance to face challenges one at a time, but the world doesn’t work that way.
When everything was done and the dust settled around me, I didn’t regret a single decision or person involved. The experience taught me how to do and be better for the next project and I’m itching to get back to it, come what may.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect of being a filmmaker for me is being able to share my world. The words that come out of my head are being read and acted out by actual human beings and now new human beings get a glimpse of what I dreamed up. Whether they like it or not, isn’t my problem ultimately. Not everything you make, will everyone love. Your audience and who you created for will get exactly from your art what you intended. Getting helpful, thoughtful feedback is also something I LOVE. I’m not above anything and learning is never done. If someone can see my vision and help me polish it and make it better, I’m all for it!
