We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful La’kamaro Johnson. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with La’Kamaro below.
La’Kamaro, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Let’s start with what makes profitability in your industry a challenge – what would you say is the biggest challenge?
Oh man, don’t get me started. The biggest issue I run into is the honesty of some customers. They take advantage of my kindness and mistake it for vulnerability and weakness. When all I’m trying to do is change their ways and their perspective on my craft. I have done a few jobs already and I still haven’t received payment. I’ve called, send messages, even emails and nothing! It truly makes this job really difficult to want to continue.
But every time I think about giving up and walking away from it all, I get flash of my little girl and the reason why I’m doing this. And! I somehow get calls from other clients to to fixe their vehicles, so it’s not all bad. I learned that the way I do things need to change, and I am in the process of doing that.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
Well, I am a medically retired veteran of 15 years of service, wo decided that I wanted to do better for myself and my family, mainly my daughter. I was born in a Jamaica where it wasn’t all rainbows and sunshine, in fact, I had a few hungry nights, but I can tell you this, my momma made it so we were happy by sacrificing her happiness and her sanity and dealing with a father who didn’t care much for us. She did everything on her own.
We left Jamaica when I was pretty young, because of crimes and poverty, my mother wanted a better life for us. And even after coming to America, my amazing father kicked me out on the streets because according to him and everyone who don’t understand my way of thinking, I was being unruly and temperamental, when all I was doing is expression dedication through my emotions. I was a very misunderstood person growing up, even today and my military, I was always the one being judged wrongfully. Which is why decided to run my own business. I even tried working with some company called Sara, and t didn’t go so well, because of who I am. It was taking away from what I do, and that helping those in need. I just want people to know that I am only human, and I put my time and dedication in to master my craft, I just asked that I get what I deserve.
Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
Yes! There was this person that made me truly wanted to quit, I did extensive work on an older vehicle, a 2005 Ford 500 in fact, I was told by this person that he wanted to do a payment plan which I was reluctant to go for, but did it anyway. After days and hours of work which took me into a whole week, I have not heard from this individual. I called, sent messages, and nothing. Even the people who referred me to him didn’t even help me get my payment. I wanted to give up so bad. But I learned that I need to take a much different approach in my business if I want to succeed. Trust only a few, believe in what I do, and make sure I get a down payment before any work.
How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
I tried working a separate job while doing my business, but then I realized that it isn’t for me. I started to miss customer’s calls, I ended up losing some customers because of the time I had to go to my other job. I even stopped being attentive to my daughter which truly made me hate myself. After realizing the path I’m going down, I decided to leave that job and refocus my efforts on my child, my business, and myself.
