Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to LaJoyce Waajid. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
LaJoyce, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today We’d love for you to start by sharing your thoughts about the pros and cons of family businesses.
I love the concept of family business! Family business is the hierarchy in the economic food chain. It is a chance for a group of people that are connected through DNA to bond and build without limits and all the while claiming victory as dynasty’s are built.
Family business is not an easy fate but it is certainly more enriching than building someone else’s dynasty.
LaJoyce, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I am LaJoyce Waajid aka The faux coffee trap Queen. I am a serial entrepreneur, opening my first business in 1998 as a consignment and gift dealer. I later decided that health and wellness was my calling so after giving birth to my son in 2003 I became an I-Act certified colon therapist and would offer traveling services to accommodate those unable to travel. My services would include colonics, foot detox and body wraps, all in the comfort of your home. By 2009 I dedicated my life to doing natural hair and would soon open up Henry county’s 1st full service natural hair salon, it is here where I started incorporating my colon therapy skills to mix products and help people from the inside out.
Nubian Hue Non Brew was born in 2017. After tweaking the formulas I decided on three faux coffee shots and fifteen latte flavors. We even have three vegan ice cream flavors. Everything was created around wellness..
The problem I help solve for my clients is offering a solution to help combat caffeine/ coffee addiction as well as offering health on the go with our prepackaged beverages that also work as a meal replacement and an awesome way to get those herbs in your system.
I am proud of the brand itself and all that it stands for because we all know that there are different hues in people and in health and Nubian Hue non Brew just wants to meet you where you are. You don’t have to be vegan to indulge!
I want people to know that I created this brand for All people that live and that aspire to live a healthy lifestyle. We have something for everyone, weather you are detoxing or just committed to healthy options, we can help.
Balance is a requirement to all things in life and we just want to help you incorporate a little bit in your coffee mug. Every beverage we sale has a series of herbs to help combat some illness and support your systems not to mention our lattes taste amazing!
We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
My story of resilience is happening now. COVID hit in 2020 and left me flat on my back. I lost almost everything because of this virus. My credit was shot because I put my oldest through Spelman and had two more children at home I have to raise. I couldn’t get any PPP loans therefore I had to get it out of the mud and just fight my way through. City hall was closed and I was unable to find resources to help support my brand therefore I kept my website up and sold beverages from my house to clients who were familiar with my brand. I still didn’t get any loans but for those that know me then you know I don’t give up easily. My push cart locations 287 Peachtree St.
And 64 Edgewood have been regranted so now is the time I show people that in spite of all things dismal how the sun can still shine.
Ones ability to withstand often time prepares you for something bigger and better, so I am just gonna keep working towards my something better. Although the business shut down for two years seeing as tho I am still here counts for something, therefore I can’t stop until there is a Faux Coffee Shop on every corner.
How did you put together the initial capital you needed to start your business?
Since I couldn’t cash that trust fund check(joking) I had to fund my business out of pocket. In 2016 I took my income tax check and turned my dream into reality. Starting Nubian Hue non Brew this way made me appreciate my vision and the dynamics of business so much more this way because at the end of the day we have to bet on ourselves!
