We were lucky to catch up with Laiz Ricci recently and have shared our conversation below.
Laiz, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. We’d love to hear the backstory of how you established your own practice.
Starting my own clinical practice was a very easy task at the beginning. I’ve found, with years of practice, that most people have trouble when they start. Well, for me it was the other way around 😂. When I graduated it was so clear for me that I wanted to work with children, so I specialized in that area. Not many people choose that, so i didn’t have much trouble finding clients since I was one of the few that worked in that area. Years have passed, and I realized with my practice that I had to work with parents too, if I wanted better results. And so I did. But then, I started to help them with their grown up problems, so they could feel better and have more energy to help their children. And without noticing, my field started to change from kids, to anxiety, relationships and self steem problems. It was a change that I didn’t notice happening, specially when I got in to hypnosis, but it made me feel so realized. But it was crazy because I still saw myself as a children psychologist, and promoted myself that way, but that was not what was happening inside my office anymore. Only when I hired a marketing team so I could start developing my own hypnosis training, I noticed that I didn’t know what kind of professional I was anymore. And then my problems started. I felt lost professionally. And that feeling stated to make me feel like I was a recent graduated professional, not one with already 10 years of experience and great results. I had my clients, I had my practice happening, but the problem was more like life purpose than practical problems.
I felt like I had to just allow myself to stay with all the doubts in my head and keep with what I was doing until I could take a breath and accept that everything has changed and also all the plans I had.
I had to grief the dying of the children psychologist to let this new professional be born. And it still is growing and developing. I don’t have everything so clear anymore, and started to Lear how to live with just questions, without answers.
And then, that’s when I realized that in life, questions are all we need. They are our path. And the answers? Well, we know we made a good choice when we feel peace in our hearts. That’s my thermometer now.
Laiz, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I graduated in psychology 10 years ago and started my own business. I see clients from all around the world, Portuguese and English. Exploring life with curiosity and passion. I am passionate about learning and growing, always looking for new adventures and challenges. Psychologist committed to promoting emotional and mental well-being, believing that each person has a unique and meaningful journey. I believe in the power of authenticity, embracing diversity and cultivating genuine connections.
I help prosper with all kinds of emotional problems, working with psychology and hypnosis as a technique to accelerate results.
Putting training and knowledge aside, what else do you think really matters in terms of succeeding in your field?
My students listen to me talk about that all the time. We need trainings and constant study, but most of all, we need practice and someone with more experience to guide us. I offer them clinical supervision, that’s when they come with their case study from a client and I guide them with what they should do, say, and treat with each client. Bringing our practice to someone with more experience help us to see things we cannot see when we are inside the island.
What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
Money is really importar, we need that to have a good life and more knowledge for our clients. But that shouldn’t be the main goal at the beginning.
What helped me with my reputation was: I always want to give the best results no matter what.
So at the beginning, people didn’t know me. It didn’t make sense to me that I started charging a higher price. So I started very low, because I wanted people to come so I could help then, give my best, so people could know who I was and what I was capable of. I worked very hard and didn’t have much money, but I had a lot of people talking about me. So gradually, I started to charge more for my sessions and working less, so I could focus on studying different topics that needed my attention in the office. And it is still that way.
