We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Laisha Barroso . We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Laisha below.
Hi Laisha , thanks for joining us today. Do you have any thoughts about how to create a more inclusive workplace?
As a Lesbian Latina, I want nothing more than for individuals who work with me to feel included and comfortable. My biggest advice for an inclusive workplace, is to be curious and empathetic.
Laisha , before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I started photography since I was 15 years old. For my 15th birthday, I begged for a camera from my parents instead of a big typical party. As every beginner photographer, I started off by taking pictures of flowers and landscapes. I eventually took a photography class in high school and started taking portraits. Graduation was around the corner and while everyone was picking a career they wanted to go to college for, I had no idea. I didn’t want to do medicine, math, or write for the rest of my life. All I had in my mind was photography. I decided that I wanted to create photos as a career and not only as a hobby. I did my own research and found an Art school, AAU, that I desperately wanted to attend. I told my plan to my parents, and unfortunately they didn’t agree to it at that moment. They were afraid of the risk it would be. They came from a different world and didn’t understand it. I proudly didn’t give them a choice, and respectfully told them I will either be attending AAU or I won’t be attending college at all. I am now in my final year of receiving my BFA of Photography at AAU.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
The most rewarding factor of being a photographer, is the models smile when they see the images I capture. It feels amazing to witness an individual become for confident after a photoshoot.
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
I have had opportunities of having my work published in magazines before, however my all time dream is to be a photographer for Vogue.
