We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Lainy Chambliss a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Lainy, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. What was the most important lesson/experience you had in a job that has helped you in your professional career?
As a former teacher, I’ve learned a multitude of valuable lessons, both personally and professionally. Here are a few key takeaways:
Adaptability: Flexibility is essential in the classroom. Every student is different, and being able to adapt my teaching style to accommodate diverse learning needs was crucial.
Patience: Teaching requires immense patience, whether it’s explaining a concept for the umpteenth time or managing a classroom full of energetic students. Patience is not only necessary for effective teaching but also for building positive relationships with students.
Continuous Learning: The learning process never stops, for both students and teachers. I’ve found that the best teachers are those who are constantly seeking new knowledge, refining their skills, and staying updated on educational trends and research.
Empathy: Understanding and empathizing with my students’ struggles and triumphs has been invaluable. Empathy allowed me to better support them academically, emotionally, and socially.
Collaboration: Collaborating with colleagues, parents, and other stakeholders is essential for student success. By working together, we can share ideas, resources, and strategies to create a more supportive learning environment.
Resilience: Teaching can be incredibly rewarding, but it also comes with its fair share of challenges. Developing resilience helped me persevere through difficult times and continue striving for excellence in my teaching practice.
Overall, being a teacher taught me the importance of empathy, adaptability, continuous learning, and resilience, all of which are essential not only in the classroom but also in life. This experience truly helped me transition into my real estate career.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I am a passionate educator turned real estate enthusiast with a heart for helping people find their perfect homes. My journey began at the University of Cincinnati, where I pursued my love for education, focusing on early childhood education. Armed with knowledge and a desire to make a difference, I embarked on a fulfilling career as a middle school math and science teacher.
During my time in the classroom, I discovered the joy of guiding students through their learning journey and fostering a supportive environment for growth. However, my path eventually led me to explore new horizons, and I found myself drawn to the dynamic world of real estate.
Transitioning from teaching to real estate has been an exciting and rewarding adventure. Drawing upon my background in education, I bring a unique blend of communication skills, empathy, and attention to detail to every client interaction. Whether it’s navigating the complexities of the market or helping individuals and families find their dream homes, I am committed to providing personalized service and ensuring a seamless experience every step of the way.

Any advice for growing your clientele? What’s been most effective for you?
Growing a clientele naturally while remaining authentic in the real estate industry involves building genuine connections, providing value, and maintaining transparency. Here are some effective strategies I have utilized:
Focus on Relationship Building: Prioritize building meaningful relationships with people in your community. Attend local events, join community groups, and engage with people on social media platforms. Show genuine interest in others and listen attentively to their needs and concerns.
Provide Value: Offer valuable information and resources to your audience through various channels. This could include hosting informational seminars about the home buying or selling process, sharing helpful tips and insights on social media, or creating informative blog posts or newsletters.
Be Authentic: Authenticity is key to building trust with potential clients. Be genuine in your interactions, and let your personality shine through in your communications. Avoid using scripted language or making promises you can’t deliver on. Instead, focus on being honest, transparent, and reliable.
Utilize Referral Marketing: Encourage satisfied clients to refer their friends, family, and colleagues to you. Word-of-mouth referrals can be incredibly powerful in generating new business. Provide exceptional service to your existing clients, and they will be more likely to recommend you to others.
Share Success Stories: Showcase your past successes and satisfied clients’ testimonials to demonstrate your track record and credibility. This can help build trust with potential clients and showcase your expertise in the real estate market.
Stay Active on Social Media: Utilize social media platforms to connect with potential clients and showcase your expertise. Share valuable content, such as market updates, home buying/selling tips, and local community information. Engage with your audience by responding to comments and messages promptly and authentically.
Networking: Attend networking events, both within the real estate industry and in your local community. Building relationships with other professionals, such as mortgage brokers, home inspectors, and attorneys, can lead to valuable referrals and partnerships.
Educate and Empower: Position yourself as a trusted advisor by educating clients about the real estate process and empowering them to make informed decisions. Provide guidance and support every step of the way, from the initial consultation to closing.
By focusing on building genuine connections, providing value, and maintaining authenticity, you can grow your clientele naturally and establish yourself as a trusted real estate professional in your community.
Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
When I first decided to pursue a career in real estate, I was filled with excitement and determination. I dove in headfirst, eager to make my mark in the industry and build a successful business. However, despite my best efforts and unwavering commitment, success didn’t come as quickly or easily as I had hoped.
In the beginning, I faced numerous challenges and setbacks. Despite my proactive approach and tireless networking, I found it difficult to gain traction in a competitive market. Deals were few and far between, and the financial strain began to weigh heavily on me.
As months passed without the desired progress, I had to confront the harsh reality that I needed to secure another source of income to make ends meet. It was a humbling moment, acknowledging that my initial leap into real estate hadn’t yielded the immediate results I had anticipated.
Though disheartened by the setback, I refused to let it deter me from my ultimate goal of building a successful real estate career. With resilience and determination, I sought out employment opportunities that would provide stability while allowing me to continue pursuing my passion for real estate on the side.
During this time, I worked diligently to hone my skills, expand my network, and learn from experienced professionals in the field. While the journey was challenging, it also provided valuable lessons and insights that would ultimately shape my approach to real estate and contribute to my long-term success.
Over time, as I gained more experience and built stronger relationships within the industry, I began to see the fruits of my labor. Deals started to materialize, referrals increased, and my confidence grew. Eventually, I reached a point where I could transition fully into real estate, leaving behind the safety net of my secondary job.
Looking back, I realize that the initial struggle was an essential part of my journey—a period of growth and resilience that tested my dedication and commitment to my goals. It taught me the importance of perseverance, adaptability, and humility in the face of adversity.
Today, as a successful real estate professional, I carry those lessons with me, grateful for the challenges that shaped me into the resilient and determined individual I am today. And while the road may have been rocky at times, I wouldn’t trade the experience for anything—it’s what made me the agent I am today.
