We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Lailaa Camara. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Lailaa below.
Lailaa, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today We’d love to hear the backstory behind a risk you’ve taken – whether big or small, walk us through what it was like and how it ultimately turned out.
Ever since I was a little girl, I always knew that I was talented, and gifted in many ways. As a little black girl, who lived in a society where people would laugh at you and judge you, so you won’t feel confident in your own skin. It affected me a lot during my childhood because I didn’t feel like I was beautiful or smart enough to do the things that I was born to do. But my mom who is my number one supporter always reminded me that the more you listen to what people say about you the more you lose yourself. As I grew up, I started to gain confidence in myself, started to realize my beauty and talents. I always knew that I had a passion for content creating and entrepreneurship . I always wanted to be my own boss and I knew I never wanted to work for somebody . at the age of 16 I started my own business I put down almost $1000 on my own . I did all the research by myself I built my website by myself. I promoted my business by myself and made over $1000 that was the biggest accomplishment I’ve ever made in my life and I will always cherish that but I moved to college and life started to get hard . I went through a very hard heartbreak, and I started to lose myself and my passion for my business. so after a year, running my first business, I closed it down so I can figure out what was the next step for me . As a kid, I would always record videos of myself like I was doing YouTube . I would do Vlogs, but I never felt confident enough to post them. One day I told myself if I keep holding Myself back I’m never going to be where I want to be so I finally put my foot down and I stopped over thinking and I took a breath and posted my first content video. The first video I posted was about my self-love journey, and just getting out of a toxic relationship. That was the first video that went viral for me. The video has reached over 15,000 views. Honestly, I didn’t think it was going to blow up but reading the comments and emails people send me always made me want to continue. because I finally stopped listening to what other people told me I didn’t just gain a bunch of followers I gained a community. Me taking content seriously during my depression really helped me . Companies have reached out to me. I’ve got a brand deals everything I’ve never thought I would’ve accomplished. At the beginning of this year, I made a promise to myself that I was going to try everything and put myself out there one of the things that I put at the top of my list was Modeling. Because I pushed myself out there created content . I have got excepted to be in New York fashion week as a model got to work with other Modeling Company ‘s. Honestly this is all because of god . I always knew that I was destined for greatness and I’m not done yet. I still have a lot to go, but the message of my story is if you don’t take a risk and if you don’t push yourself out there you’re never going to know your success because you keep doubting yourself.
Lailaa, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
If you don’t know me, allow me to introduce myself . My name is lailaa camara I am a entrepreneur. I am content creator and model. on my platforms, my content is mostly about lifestyle which is vlogs and also I influence my audience, which means I introduce them to new products I review products from company’s . I also like to share part of my life in my content and last year chapter I focus on myself. I created a series of self loving and solo dates. The reason I decided to be a influencer was because I wanted to influence other girls that if I can do it, you can do it also. what sets me apart from other influencers is that I didn’t grow with a big following had to work hard to get to where I’m at. I like to be as honest to my supporters and that’s why they love my content . The problem i solve for my clients is a review products and give my honest opinion on what I think about the . I advocate a lot on putting yourself first and self love. and I also want to launch a e-book on how to promote yourself on social media without having a large following. soon I want to help other young girls just like me who want to become an influencer that you don’t have to have a large followings or have a lot of money. All you have to do is just start. I am most proud of myself. I didn’t really think I would be where I am now. What I do want my followers to know is that I have so much more in store to show you guys and you just have to wait and see.
We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
The advice I would give to people who want to build their audience on social media is that you have to be yourself if you’re trying to be like everybody else nobody’s gonna like your content because it’s repetitive.
Is there mission driving your creative journey?
I do have a particular goal and mission that is driving me every day. I always repeat to myself. Am I where I want to be? And the answer to the question is no . so I’ make sure I work every day to reach my goals so I could be where I want to be . Another thing I like to do is look back at my goals list and see am I working towards achieving them? Am I close to achieving them?
