We recently connected with Laghe Andrews and have shared our conversation below.
Laghe, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Going back to the beginning – how did you come up with the idea in the first place?
As an entrepreneurial spirit I have traveled the US on self funded tours, sold CD’s and posters out the back of my trunk, and made sure the people around me were supplied with some work. This type of experience, hustle, and determination is what turned my solo mission into a journey that would not only push me to want to expand and push the creative muscles within myself and the people around me, but provide lucrative lanes for our black entertainment community. Knowing that proper networking, exposure, professionalism, healthy and working business relationships, and real paid opportunities within wellness induced spaces is the only way for the production of the type of representation we need from our black entertainers, I have made it a personal mission to be able create and build several platforms so as to start the process towards building a stronger, healthier, and more conscious black entertainment community.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
Growing up a Jehovah Witness kid really entailed in me a sense of kindness that sometimes has my heart bleeding on my sleeve for the people around me. Although that type of beginning allowed me to be an empathetic, sweet, and caring soul, it was not all Disney fairy tales nor was my life so easy going. With a mother who suffered from manic depression and and a father who functioned out of self love and ego I had to adapt to a life that pushed me to feel I had to grow up quickly to compensate for the things I and my younger brother were not receiving from our parents. This type of beginning in life formed my passion for wanting to create lasting relationship based in health and wellness that I, and the others around me, could grow mentally, professionally, emotionally, and financially. LaGhe Music Entertainment was founded within this ideology and has only grown since. The entertainment industry, especially the black entertainment industry, has made a habit of pushing negative black narratives and images to the forefront of every outlet creative a flawed reality and dangerous realty our youth and others around us. This is topic that deserves direct and unwavering attention with several avenue for correction and my passion has lied with creating such avenues. With the creation of shows like “IzzA VybE”, “Finessin’ Flava”, and “Phreez PhrameTV” my focus has been laser pointed on the fact that wellness induced spaces can create healthy role models and imagery throughout the black entertainment community. There is no denying that the internet and social media has become our sources for entertainment, news, and some education which is the reason why healthier mind frames for more positive representation matter so much right now. I have been working diligently create a network of people, talents, and professionals who are passionate about bringing change to what we are seeing and hearing from the black entertainer who provide for us everyday.
What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
My childhood equipped me with passion, empathy, and entrepreneurial spirit, and enough kindness to wrap the earth but it left me naive, without much discernment, and always yearning for love and connections. Having to learn that the world and the people in it can be cold, calculated, unjust, and unkind was a very hard lesson that still has me baffled someone times. I am who I am at face value and I love to love, but I had to realize that people did not grow up in the same environment as I did so the world taught them very different lessons. This is the reason I had to learn to surround myself with people who see me for who I am and use better discernment when choosing the people I work with.
How do you keep your team’s morale high?
The only advice I can give about managing a team and maintaining high morale is to create personal relationship with each person from the very start because the closer you are to your team members the easier it will become to build together, solve issues together, and trust one another when it counts.
